“Can you check if I spelled this right?”
Sawyer, lying on her stomach on the light green sheets of her bed, turned her laptop around so Lana could look. The screen was covered in ridiculously tiny text, with the title “Interbreeding Dragons of the World” centered at the top.
“Hebridean? Yeah, that’s right,” Lana replied, turning back to her textbook.
“But spellcheck says it’s wrong,” Sawyer said as she righted her laptop and scrutinized the word.
“Spellcheck lies,” Lana said, highlighting a group of words midway through the page.
Rae, sitting on her own bed with her laptop and typing vigorously, said, “And the truth comes out.”
“We should just have our own wizarding internet, with our own wizarding spellcheck that doesn’t tell me I’m wrong every other word,” Sawyer muttered.
“Or you could just ignore spellcheck,” Lana suggested, closing her textbook. After studying all day, the words were becoming jumbled and blurry.
“This is true,” Sawyer said, and looked up as Lana stood and gathered her pajamas. “You’re going to bed?”
“There are only so many criminal techniques a person can take in in a day.” She stepped into the bathroom and closed the door, changing and dropping her dirty clothes into the laundry basket.
When she faced the mirror, she took a washcloth in hand and ran it under the faucet for a moment. Her short hair, which barely reached her chin, made her look older, and her skin was seemingly flawless. As she ran the washcloth over her face, her makeup came off, and the bags under her eyes were revealed.
Suddenly without the makeup, she looked worse than she remembered. Sleep deprivation had taken a toll on her health, she knew that, but she looked pale and sickly and exhausted. She frowned at the reflection, wishing she had her old face back, the one that was perfect no matter what way she looked at it.
I need a good night’s sleep, she thought, Just one night without a nightmare. That’s all I need.
She brushed her teeth and left the bathroom. Sawyer and Rae were still typing away on their computers as Lana switched off the lights, the brightness of the screens making their faces glow.
“’Night, ladies,” Lana said as she climbed into bed and pulled the covers over her, wrapping herself in a cocoon of purple sheets.
“’Night,” they responded simultaneously, Sawyer adding, “Sweet dreams, Lana.”
“Here’s hoping,” Lana agreed, and closed her eyes, praying the nightmares would stay away.
