Dean studied his watch. 11:54. They had six minutes. Six minutes till midnight and Cas still wasn't here. He clutched his gun nervously calming himself with the familiar feel of the smooth handle. Hell, if he was gonna die at least he would do so with a gun in his hand. Sammy had the trunk of the Impala open and was recounting the weapons they had packed for around the tenth time, Dean knew this was a tactic of Sammy's to calm himself before a fight. It wasn't as if the brothers hadn't prepared, indeed they had spend every moment of the last few weeks doing so, pouring over textbooks and evaluating every spell known to hunter, angel or demon. They'd felt brave then ready to take on whatever came at them, but then, then they had Cas and now he was a no show.

11:56.

Dean swore. Dammit Cas! He said he would be here. He promised...

"Hey Dean," Sam called, making his way towards his brother. "I don't think he's coming."

"Yeah, no crap Sam." Dean replied the anger resonating though his voice. "Sam he, he always came when-

"You called?"

Dean span around, he recognized that voice. He was right, There was the angel, stood slightly obscured in the darkness and with a hint of a smile playing on his lips.

Castiel walked forward, coming into the moonlight. "You think I would abandon you now?, he said "I'm not going to leave you again, ever. I promised. I thought you knew by know that I stick to my promises."

Dean felt a small surge of happiness course through him giving him the urge to laugh. Cas was here, they'd be alright. It would all be alright.

"You're wrong though Dean, continued Cas, I never came when you called, I came when you most needed me."

Dean felt the heat rise in his face, and cleared his throat gruffly, turning around. He heard Sam laugh and gave him a cold stare which had no effect.

"I'm glad you're here Cas, Sam said still smiling. We've got everything ready, now it's just a matter of waiting for them to arrive."

"Right." replied Cas

The mood suddenly darkened again as the reality of the situation washed over them all. Without meaning to they each moved closer together in front of the Impala looking for some form of comfort. This was the worst, and probably the last thing they would face together. The last battle of Team Free Will.

If this was their last night then Cas needed to tell Dean. But how? He knew he'd never been very good with words, only just recently understanding the complication of human emotions. Cas could only think of one way to show Dean...

His hand slowly slipped down to his side, accidentally brushing against Dean's. Only this time it was purposeful and he made no attempt to move his hand away. No resistance came from Dean so Cas cautiously slipped his hand into his. It was warm and strong and Cas felt strength within him. He risked a quick glance at Dean who just stared straight ahead. But reassurance came to Cas when he felt Dean's hand squeeze his, holding them tight together. They stood there for a few minutes hands clasped together, the gentle swaying of the trees behind them the only noise. Suddenly Cas knew what to say,

Dean, I-

BOOM

A huge noise erupted to the side of them as Sam screamed "Get down!" Cas felt Dean wrench their grip apart so he could cover his face, the moment between them gone. Earth and rock flew everywhere as a high piercing cackle came from within the explosion.

Midnight had come.
