This story is partially true. I mean we all have crushes right? ;)
Expect this story is a bit different. We have a crush, after awhile we may move on. But in Emily's case, it's been 12 years and still she cannot move on.
The number of the chapter depicts the age Emily is. For example Chapter 1- 8 years i.e. Emily's age. Similarly the next chapter would be 9 years and so this will go on till she is 20 years. So basically the first 19 chapters will go pretty fast. The story actually begins when she is 20 years.
