jackson woke up to someone knocking on his door, sunlight shining through his windows. jinyoung wasn't asleep next to him, or in his room at all, so jackson assumed the younger boy had just gone back to his own dorm room.
"one second!" he groaned into his pillow and lazily got out of bed, stretching as he walked to the door of his room. he opened it to reveal none other than mark tuan.
the older boy pushed past him as soon as he opened the door and went to the refrigerator to retrieve a bottle of water. as he walked he grumbled, "what the hell did you do now, jackson?" jackson was confused, closing the door before trailing after mark. "what do you mean?" he asked.
mark pulled his phone out of his pocket and opened it, scrolling through tons of texts from jinyoung. most of them said things along the lines of, "you're so much better than me, mark tuan," or, "i can see why jackson would love you more." jackson frowned at the text messages and snatched mark's phone away from him so he could read all of the texts.
he soon realized the texts were sent last night and gave mark his phone back, feeling better. "you don't have to worry about it, mark, jinyoung and i talked about that last night." jackson said to which mark raised his eyebrows. "really?" jackson nodded.
mark took a step closer to jackson, crossing his arms over his chest. "then, why haven't i seen him at all since yesterday?" despite having known each other for a short amount of time, mark seriously cared about jinyoung. he was, in a way, attached to the younger boy and felt a need to protect him.

the moment jinyoung set foot in his house, he regretted his decision. he was greeted by a harsh slap against his cheek that instantly brought tears to his eyes. jinyoung and his mom both stared with wide eyes at the man in front of them. jinyoung's father may have been an ass and verbally abused the two of them, but he had never hit one of them before.
"what the hell is wrong with you?!" his dad shouted in his face and jinyoung winced at the smell of alcohol that came from his breath. jinyoung squeezed his eyes shut momentarily to collect himself and brushed past his dad, wanting to go to his room. "yeah, go study, or something. learn how to stop being a fucking faggot," his father spat.
jinyoung turned around so he was facing his parents again, halfway up the staircase. "being gay isn't wrong, dad..." he trailed off, already feeling less confident than he did a few seconds ago.
his father looked at him with a shocked expression. "did you just talk back to me?" when jinyoung didn't reply, his dad stomped over to him and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt in order to pull him off of the staircase. the older man drew his hand back and clenched it into a first before he hit his child in his face, causing him to stumble back and fall onto the floor.
black spots filled jinyoung's vision as his father continued by kicking his torso. the man repeated the action until his wife stepped forward and hesitantly grabbed onto his shoulder. "i think that's—" she was cut off when he turned around and slapped her. the man didn't say anything, he just stood there, breathing heavily.
after a few minutes of the three of them standing, or laying, there, jinyoung slowly began to stand up. he winced at the pain that filled his torso, feeling a little dizzy as well. jinyoung broke the tension in the room by heading upstairs and into his own room, closing the door behind him.
still downstairs, his father brushed past jinyoung's mom and exited the house, leaving her standing there by herself.

jinyoung wasn't responding to jackson's calls,
or texts, so the older of the two started to become worried. however, he thought maybe he was just overreacting. jackson knew where jinyoung was because junmyeon came to him and told him, but he thought jinyoung would just leave for a day and come back.he was wrong, of course. the next day, jinyoung still did not answer him. jackson decided he should try and go to the younger boy's house to see what was up. he asked mark if he wanted to go since he knew the elder cared for jinyoung a lot, and because mark had a car and jackson hated taking the bus.
jinyoung's house wasn't too far from the university, so the two boys arrived there fairly quickly. they sat in mark's car outside of the house for a few minutes before mark finally broke the silence. "if you aren't going to go, i will," he said, unbuckling his seatbelt. jackson quickly swatted at mark's hand and glared at him. "no, i'm going."
jackson exited the car and walked up to the house, then he knocked on the front door. he was a bit nervous because he didn't know what was going to happen. jackson heard indistinct shouting come from inside the house and about a minute later, jinyoung's mother opened the door.
"oh, hello, jackson..." the woman said quietly. jackson immediately noticed the tears running down her face, but brushed it off because all he cared about at the moment was jinyoung. "can i talk to jinyoung, please?"
jinyoung's mom glanced behind her nervously before shaking her head. "no, sorry. he's busy." after saying that, she leaned closer to jackson said in a hushed voice, "come back in a couple hours." then she retreated back into the house and closed the door.
jackson, thinking it was probably best if he didn't push any further currently, walked back to mark's car. for once, he decided to trust the older woman.
