the lower hand

Like clockwork, her phone rang at 9:30pm.

"How come you always call me at the same time? And why 9:30?" She gave no preamble.

"Well, 9:30 because hopefully you'll be done with your homework by then, and I'm punctual you seem like a routine kind of girl."

As he said that, it struck her how he knew so much about her, and she knew nothing about him, not even his age. It rattled her as she felt like he had the upper hand.

"You know, I'm going to keep a record of how many times I've left you speechless."

She snapped out of her thought process, "You know, you've got to stop making the same joke. No wonder you haven't scored a girl."

"You wound me."

"Who are you?"

He sighed, "You're not going to drop it are you?"

"Nope."

"Is that why you called yesterday? It couldn't have been only because you wanted to apologise. Like you said, you don't apologise."

Shit.

"And I'm putting a fourth tally mark on 'Leaving My Crush Speechless' wall."

She groaned in frustration. He had a crush on her, so she should be the one leaving him speechless.

"You're really annoying, do you know that?"

The boy mock gasped, "I wasn't aware!"

Her lips twitched upwards, just by a bit.

"But I'm right aren't I? More than to apologise to me, you called because you were curious?"

Cindy was starting to get irritated. She was always in control of the conversations she had, but this boy was completely throwing her off track. He had her figured out, and it put her on edge. She was sure that not knowing his identity put her at this disadvantage.

Now, more than ever, she was determined to find out who the boy on the other side of the line was.

AN: I'm so sorry I've been AWOL this week! A month into 11th, everything is in full swing. I had a major test on Friday and have four lined up for next week. Hopefully, I'll get a chapter of KD up next weekend, but this weekend seems highly unlikely. I'm so sorry. :(

Also, I know the plot is a little slow but I'm trying to give a logical explanation as to why Cindy should continue these conversations. In most dialogue books, I feel like it isn't properly explained as to why the protagonist thinks it's okay or safe to talk to someone they don't know. For all Cindy knows, the person on the line could be some 40 year old stalker, so I'm playing with her strong curiosity and need to be in control.
