~~~~~
White.
Just white.
Screeches and howls. Moans and groans. Wheel's on the ground, making horrible, high-pitched noises. Loved ones crying, the smell of soap and death too similar. Soft cloths, warm beds, rising up, rising down. Beeping sounds that seem endless, only to turn into long, held out pitches. Scandals, sexism, harassment, vomit. Lab coats and nametags. Tacky couches, uncomfortable chairs. Receptionists, caring less whether or not whoever was wherever. Cameras, watching all moves made. Closets filled with the unthinkable. Underground morgues with cornoners, awaiting the dead.
The faint beating of a heart; small, short breaths. Your eyes burst open as you gasp for air. Beeping gets faster. Looking around, you notice an elderly man sitting nearby.
"___?! It's a miracle; I can't believe you're awake!" The older man hugged you, spurring you quite the confusion.
Your mouth was open, one eyebrow up. "I-I..." You gave the man a confused look. "I don't know you..."
You felt as though you had watched the elder's heart break into pieces. He opened his mouth, then nodded. "I'll get your doctor. I'm Watari, by the way."
"Okay, Watery..." Were you in...a hospital? Where were your parents? They hadn't left for their trip yet.
A nurse walked into the room with the Watari man. "Hi, Haruhi. I'm going to ask you a few questions, okay?" The woman was a smiling, beautiful, Japanese woman. "Who is the current Prime Minister of Japan?"
"Uh..." Your parents had you informed on most of the affairs of other countries, but not too much. "Noboru Takeshita?"
"What year is it?"
"1988."
"Thank you. I'm pretty sure Haruhi is suffering from major amnesia. She's very lucky to be alive from that car accident." The nurse looked at Watari. "Based on what you've told me, you already know how to react in this situation." The nurse turned to you. "Haruhi, this man is your grandfather, Albert. He said that you will be going back to Tokyo once you're better."
Watari/Albert turned to the nurse. "I'll inform her with information that isn't too devastating."
"Excellent. If all is well, she should be discharged later this week." The nurse left.
'Albert' came over to your bedside. "It's 2004. You're twenty-five."
You looked down. I have boobs!
"You were working on an investigation. You're apart of the NPA, The National Police Association. During this investigation, you were studying a major mass-murderer, known as Kira. If you're approved by your supervisor, you'll go back."
Looking at him with confusion, you replied, "My name's not Haruhi, it's ___. What am I doing in Japan anyways?"
He smiled. "You moved here to work. Your name on the case is Haruhi; as it's a very dangerous case, you and the others were given aliases. I was told by your supervisor to use your alias with this."
"O-Okay. Anything else I need to know?"
"Yes. It's currently August. You were in a coma for almost four months. A horrible car accident is what caused this, though you were the only one who was injured." 'Albert' paused, looking away, then back at you. "Your supervisor, Ryuzaki, is a very direct, blunt man. Don't be surprised by anything he throws at you."
You were still trying to process all of this information. Breathing deeply for a moment, you nodded back at 'Albert'. "How will I get to work? I don't know anything about now..."
