Dust flew up in clouds under her feet as she ran. She coughed and hiccuped, tears racing down her cheeks. The dusk ahead of her was a new future; a chance at happiness. Freedom. She ran towards the setting sun, as darkness surrounded her.
Now the only light was the sun, and the streetlights that turned on as she darted through the familiar streets she'd never see again. Her breath shuddered out past her lips, and her lungs burned. But she didn't stop. She continued on, depending on the promise of a new life.
This girl was brave. She was never afraid to speak her mind, until now.
So she ran.
She didn't know what else to do.
She'd been through so much pain, so much hurt, and so much fear. And now she was free.
She started to hear the sirens.
She vowed to herself that she wouldn't let them catch her. She wouldn't survive a day more if she was captured. So she continued down the street, turning a corner and running straight out of town.
She was scared. No, terrified.
She was terrified, and no one could help her.She was alone in this. She was free, yet she never felt more trapped.
She hoped that she'd find a new family soon, that would protect her and care for her.She flinched and ran faster, having heard a scream and a few gunshots.
Later on she turned to see her town in the distance, with flames reaching and grabbing toward the stars that were so high above. She saw a stream of people evacuating, and most were run over by a large black truck, followed by two more smaller ones.
His security.
They saved him.
But not her......The girl turned and walked off, triumphant.
This girl's name was Caroline, and she had just killed the dictator's wife. Her mother.
