*Chapter 2*
A soft growl came from under the bed, where that pesky cat had escaped to when Alice’s necklace fell on the fat grumpy animal and got tangled in her fur.
“Come out of there, Grumps,” she said, calling the cats name and reaching under the bed, getting swatted at in the process. Alice’s mom had gotten her the cat when they first moved here in June as a present. Alice immediately named her Grumps after her scrunched up face, and she soon realized that it also fit the cat’s personality.
Now, with Alice’s lucky owl necklace stuck in the cat’s fur, Grumps was hiding under Alice’s bed, just out of reach. Alice’s mom walked in the room and shook a small plastic bag filled with cat treats. Grumps came trotting out from under the bed and rubbed up against her leg. Her mom put a few treats on the floor. Grumps quickly gobbled them up and waddled out of the room.
“Wait! My necklace is still stuck on your back!” Alice groaned, and stood up from the floor.
“I’ll get it, get your bag together. We’re leaving in ten minutes.” Her mom followed the cat out of the room, softly whistling to try and catch its attention.
Alice rubbed the back of her neck. A small ache was making its way up her spine from crouching down on the floor. She massaged the spot quickly and walked over to her bed.
She has been going to this school for at least a month, but she was still a bit nervous. At least Grace was there. Grace was Alice’s cousin and best friend. She was born three weeks before Alice, and never let her forget it. Grace was a lot of help to Alice since she moved here. She introduced her to all her friends and even invited her to a few parties.
People often mistook them for sisters, since they looked practically identical. They both had long natural auburn colored hair, but Grace normally wore hers up. Their eyes were also the only thing that was different on them. Grace had dark gray eyes that sometimes turned blue, while Alice had dark brown eyes that would turn dark green whenever she cried. The girls were both about 5’2” but Alice was about an inch and a half taller.
The girls also had two completely different styles. Grace was famous for being girly, and her favorite thing to wear was a frilly skirt. Alice was the complete opposite. Skirts were uncomfortable to her unless it was a dance costume. She loved wearing baggy sweat pants since they were easy to move in or a nice cozy pair of leggings.
Alice tossed her books into her bag, grabbed her phone from her bed and raced out to the living room. Her mom was holding the necklace out to her. Alice spun around so her mom could put it on her.
“Thank you.”
“You’re Welcome, now let’s hurry or we’ll be late.”

Grace leaned on her locker as Alice was shoving her books and her bag inside. “You actually use your locker? I just carry everything around with me,” Grace said, picking at her nails.
“That’s why you have a bad back. Maybe if you used your locker, you wouldn’t spend so much money on massages every week.” Alice shut her locker door and started walking to class. Grace followed.
“That means I’d have to figure out my locker combination, and who has time for that anyways? Oh! I almost forgot! That new kid I told you about, he’s here today and he’s absolutely gorgeous! Seriously if Max wasn’t after me right now…” she trailed off as they entered the classroom.
