"Hurry!" AnnMarie whispered lifting the window open. The breeze from the New York atmosphere brushed her skin lightly and sent the mail resting on the window seal all over her loft. Two weeks worth of junk mail looked almost like confetti against her indian rugopedia.
"Dammit," she looked at the envelopes covering her floor. "Get in, Niall." she added.
Niall peered in from the fire escape and looked at the floor. His eyes scanned the mess of the room then bounced back to AnnMarie.
"Easy fix," he reassured. He ducked out and threw his leg over, stepping into the apartment that was million degrees warmer than the autumn New York evening.
AnnMarie had gathered half of the envelopes as Niall walked passed her. With a kneel he scooped up the rest of the envelopes and held them out to AnnMarie.
"Vuala" he said with a grin.
AnnMarie held out her stack and gestured towards the window.
While grabbing the letters and bills, Niall broke the silence,"You know I didn't fly all the way to New York to be your butler. But if you ever need a sexy fireman, call me." Niall reached out and offered the mail back. His stubbornness had no match.
AnnMarie reluctantly grabbed the envelopes and walked towards the window.
"Butler does suit you. I think it's the accent." she joked placing the envelopes down. She shot him a look.
Niall straightened his posture and held a hand behind his back.
"I am very sorry for the inconvenience madam. Please, do forgive me." Niall leaned forward. Forgiveness with AnnMarie was never easy to come by. Even in a joke.
Niall waited but was met only by the sly tilt of AnnMarie's head. Nada
Niall's seriousness morphed into a grin and AnnMarie shared a laugh. Niall bowed.
"Well... why did you fly 'all the way to New York?" AnnMarie added walking up to Niall. She kissed him and smiled. Niall returned the smile.
He chuckled and kissed her back. Then quickly Niall's face grew grim and he stared into her eyes. She looked deeper into his but couldn't find a reason behind his hesitation. She leaned in as if to see what pain laid behind his eyes.
He backed up slowly allowing a gap to divide them. And even though he stopped, the gap only seemed to grow and stretch. Her walls contorted and contracted in a million ways. The windows shattered. Glass was thrown everywhere. The envelopes flew into the air, orbiting AnnMarie and Niall until they formed a wall of solid white.
AnnMarie fell to her knees and began to tear up. Niall's expression sent chills down her spine, yet he just stood there, feet away from her. He didn't even flinch
"What? What is it?" she cried out, questioning the terror that engulfed her.
Niall looked down at AnnMarie sadly. The world seemed to come to a stop. All that orbited and surrounded them hovered in the air awaiting the eerie outcome.
He walked up and knelt down. Niall lifted AnnMarie's chin so that their eyes met.
"This. This isn't real. Anne, wake up."
