"I can't do this. It's too soon. What will she say? What if she no longer even loves me?" Lumiere thought to himself, wringing his hands nervously.
Babette looked down at the snow on the ground for most of the walk and it was clear she wasn't her same talkative self at the time. Was this is a bad sign?
With all of these signs, Lumiere found his challenge hopeless. There was no way she'd say yes in this broken state. But then again, if she was that broken, maybe it would make her feel more comfortable to talk about her time? He told her she didn't have to say anything, but a part inside of him was dying to know what happened. Could Babette be unfaithful like he always had? Mon dieu... he never realized how terrible it felt.
"Babette-" he started boldly, knowing there was no other way to get his words out. "If I could give you all of the flowers in this garden, it still wouldn't express my remorse for... making you feel so insignificant all these years." He made a move to hold her hands gently, and she didn't refuse the gesture. "I'd run off with other girls, then run off with you, and it was never fair to you. I ran off with those girls because of attraction or boredom, though. I ran off with you because of love."
He paused to take a deep breath, looking up into her questioning, but accepting eyes. "Oh Babette! I would give the whole world to you if I had the chance. There are no other girls, and there never will be," he bent down on one knee, "will you marry me?"
She hid her mouth with her hand. He realized yet again that it had been hours since she had last talked, and was worried for a moment that she wouldn't. "Lumiere... this is a lot to take in so soon..."
"We can take it in together! We can be there for each other and there'll be no one else to worry about," he reassured, standing up and taking her in his arms.
"Can we talk about what happened first? There's a lot to go through," she whispered, and he nodded, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek. The two walked over to a bench in the snow and sat down.
Lumiere started first. "The other day in my room... I decided I wanted to marry you, but I didn't know how'd I propose. Suddenly I realized Angelique would help me plan it all out. I know it wasn't fair to you to be thinking of other things, but when I imagined you in a white dress... and now you're in a red one."
"I ran away to the town and cleaned Belle's old cottage for the arrival of her father. I went down to get breakfast and met a man. He got me food, took me to his tavern for multiple nights, bought me books... and then I learned that he was the man who led the rampage on his castle, and I had to get out of there," she explained, running a hand through her hair.
"And why are you wearing his clothes?" Lumiere asked, trying not to sound bluntly jealous.
"Ah, these? Some man at the bar spilled his drink on me. Not all of us are like that you know," she answered teasingly. It was fun to push Lumiere to the edge when she was in control.
"Alright, alright. Mademoiselle, I hate to pressure you so, but have you rethought your decision on becoming a Madame? I know I can't give you all that he gave you, but I can certainly try."
She smiled for the first time in a long time. "Okay. Yes, I'll marry you," she smiled. He kissed her sweetly on the lips then slipped the golden ring on her finger. It was time for their happily ever after.
//: Hello! I find this a good place to end, but if anyone wants a continuation/second book that can be arranged. Hope you enjoyed!
