The Inabilities of The Heart

Prologue

"It must be awfully terrible, since you have nothing to imagine..." ~an original quote by the author

"Andrew, you are wasting your life on these silly little experiments! I'm sorry, but I can no longer bear to see you like this!" Dr. Carstle's wife, Theresa, shouted.

"They're not silly. Nor are they experiments." Dr. Andrew Carstle groaned.

"You're a pathetic excuse for a man, Andrew."

The mad man laughed maniacally. "Do you honestly think I care?! If you really feel that way, then just leave! NO ONE'S STOPPING YOU!!!" He shouted at the top of his lungs.

Theresa went quiet for a moment. "Fine, then. I will." She spoke softly.

And then, she left without even stopping to get money or pack up her necessary items.

Dr. Carstle went down to his laboratories, deep in the cellars of his home. There was a long, thin table, with something placed on it. An opaque white sheet was draped over it neatly enough so that it covered the whole entire table.

In one swift motion, Dr. Carstle grabbed the corner of the sheet, and pulled it off. He threw it to the ground.

For many months, he had worked. Stitching, tinkering, stealing dead human body pieces off of female corpses in nearby cemeteries... He even made a beautiful, long white gown... All for her.

And now, with his wife out of the picture, Dr. Andrew Carstle could get to work. He grabbed the spare bits of machinery, and placed it right over the gaping hole in the object. He fit it to shape a heart- not the regular human heart, but the heart which symbolized love. He closed up the the hole over the clockwork heart, and stood back. On the table, lay the form of a young woman. Her face was no more than sixteen years, despite the fact that it was covered in grease from Carstle's machinery, and black thread from his (less than mediocre) stitching. But, tonight, it would finally happen. Everything was ready. Her body was complete, she was dressed in the gown he had made, and Andrew had what he needed for the two of them to run away.

The girl's ticking heart beat softly.

"I'll name you... Josephine." he whispered. then, he began to work the dark magic in which to bring Josephine- the woman of his dreams- to life.

Now all he needed to do was wait. Within twenty-four hours, Josephine would be ready. Carstle would come back down, wake her, and she would instantly fall in love. Not only because of the magic the mad doctor had cast, but because she owed it to him, as well- he created her, gave her form.

Dr. Carstle heard a knocking upon his door. He took off his glasses and lab coat, and went upstairs, locking the door to the laboratories behind him. He opened the door.

"Good evening." He smiled.

"Dr. Andrew Carstle, you are under arrest upon charges of witchcraft. You will hang by the rope around your neck until you're dead." A police officer immediately barked, cuffing Carstle's wrists together and slamming him against the stone ground.

Dr. Andrew Carstle would never see Josephine again.
