Son of commander Erwin Smith has been training with his father since he was 5 years of age. His mother Katherine died when he was 7 years of age. When his father left for missions his mother would always take him to the doctor Grisha Yaeger. Every day the doctor would always inject him and would always tell him that it was so he can grow big and strong like his father. He did this for 2 years until (Y/n)'s mother died.

Ever since his mother died he has been training with his father. At the age of 10 his father told him to join the survey corps. And gladly accepted. When he joined he met some of the members. When he met Levi he hated him at first but then after bonding together they got along great. Levi was like the brother he never had. He would always protect him.

At the age of 16 he had grown alot he is the same height as his father. He trained everyday and has gotten stronger. The injections that he gotten when he was younger started to take effect. He found out about his strength when he was training. He had kicked them on the arm and broke it so Hanji decided to check him and the results were amazing. Soon after he trained to control his strength and his father  was impressed.
