Long, long ago(waaaaay before you were born) there lived a human tribe in the South Pacific. The tribe's symbol was a crab. In fact, this tribe loves crabs. They even thought that there were crab gods. Everyday, they would sail to other islands and steal another tribe's shiniest or most prized possessions in order to appease the crab gods. One day, a spirit warned the tribe that if they steal more things, she will curse them. The tribe started worrying. They didn't want to give up the shiny things they had found in the past. So they sent out their sage to find a way to stop the spirit from cursing their tribe. The sage sail for days until he found an island full of crab burrows. He knew it was the perfect island to search because, obviously, his tribe loves crabs. While he was searching, he found three items that might appease the spirit:a Hawaiian chief hat, some mermaid scales, and a zora fin. The sage brought the items back to the village where the spirit was waiting for his arrival. The tribe presented the items to the spirit in hopes that she would like them. The spirit didn't like them. She knew that these items were stolen before. The spirit used her magic to curse the tribe. This curse transformed everyone in the tribe into half human, half coconut crab monsters. The chief of the tribe decided that the tribe should start a new life underwater. Now the tribe still steals shiny things but now they do it to attract fish. The people in the tribe are now known as kani.
(Fun fact:kani is crab in Japanese. Isn't that weird for a Hawaiian legend?)
The end...or should I say the beginning of a new tribe.
