Hey im trying a new story out here. It's for English, so It'll be rather short, but, Eh.... well here it is! And it is now edited!!!
I was herded by my so-called parents into the cold, uninviting building. Surrounded by a dark forest, out in the middle of nowhere, menacing iron fences with sharp tops guard the fairly sinister building. It looked like one of those super creepy insane asylums. I wasn’t sure as to whether the fence was to keep people out, or to keep the patients in. We shuffled into a large lobby- if you could even call it that. Across the room was a large sign with bold letters Psychiatric Hospital for the Mentally Unstable. The sterile white walls glared at me.
Freak, they called.
The people who “raised” me (it seems unfair to call them my parents) stayed as far as they could from me while trying to look like a nuclear family. Appearances. That’s what started the whole thing.
I was climbing a tree when I fell. My long black hair splayed all around me. I broke my pale leg. That’s when my mother came out in a flurry of panic. I was about twelve at the time. Everything hurt; my back and left leg especially. I was in tears.
The woman took one long look at me and fainted. My father rushed out, seeing Mother fall and woke her up. She sat up, stuttering and as pale white as our house.
He took one look at me, stared at me straight in my deep indigo eyes; a glare mind you, “Thank God you’re adopted.”
As cliché as that sounds, I kid you not that’s what he said. And at that moment, I forgot the excruciating pain; I stopped crying and was rather happy to find that I was adopted. It was literally painfully obvious now, but even before that, I didn’t really get along with the family, except the estranged aunt who died the year before the incident.
In the reception room we were currently standing in, there were three comfortable looking chairs and a counter in the wall. It had a rather fancy metal screen protecting the employees from any potentially psychotic person.
An average looking fifty-something year-old man walked through a door to greet us. He was average in every way except that he was bald with a humongous crooked nose. And the fact that he smelled funny. I might be under exaggerating the nose a little bit. All you could see when you looked at him was his large proboscis. It was beyond a nose; it was a trunk like an elephant.
“Well,” he began rather loudly, “nice to finally see you here.” His broad grin was dwarfed only his elephantine sniffer.
I had seen him once before, but only briefly in the dark basement.
I gave the man a slight nod.
“Then let’s come over here, sign some documents, and go our respective ways!” This man was ridiculously jubilant.
The two people, who I am now considering strangers, quickly scrawled their usual sloppy signatures, gave me very obligated “byes”, then left before I had a chance to say anything; not that I wanted to.
“Whew, I am glad they are gone.”
I looked at him in surprise; then I realized that he must have seen right through their slipshod act.
“They weren’t really even trying,” he shook his head in a disapproving manner; confirming my thoughts. “Let’s get you settled in; your roommate will give you the grand tour.” He led me to a door near the black chairs. “Have you met your birth parents yet?”
I shook my head. I hadn’t. Not that they would have allowed me to. I didn’t even know who they were. Did they not want me? Or was I taken? Or could they simply not provide for me? Were they good nice people, or addicts? I had many questions, but no answers.
It was a fairly tense walk down the gaunt hallway. We turned a corner, and BAM! It was in your face electric blue; one of the colors you see when you get uncomfortably close to lightning.
The doctor chuckled, presumably at my startled expression.
“This is what is generally called the Tidal Hall. It’s where most of the supernaturals reside, here and the Meadow Hall, where you will be staying. The Purple Hall is where the classes are. There’s art, gym, and music. Most of the duller halls, such as Coffee Land, which is the brown hall, is where the bi-polar humans are, and the beige hall is where the psychosis patients are. It’s a very secluded hallway for obvious reasons. The White Hall is for the schizophrenics, they don’t usually come out of their room. The final hall, the Ketchup hall, which is a light red, is for the more lucid humans. One of the most infamous of them is Lucas, I’m sure Iris will fill you in from here.”
We then turned another corner to an intense clover green hall. He stopped at the eleventh door down.
Iris, the plaque read.
“You should read this. It’s from your birth parents. They are good people, don’t ever doubt that, Raven. Your name will be added by tomorrow.” He opened the door after knocking. “I am Dr. Fallon if you need anything.”
“Oh hi Doc!” A short girl with equally short hair bounced into view. She stood about six inches shorter than me at five foot. Her hair was a vivid turquoise blue. “Is this my new roommate? I’m Iris, and just to warn you, I am OCD. It’s not bad, though people tend to get rather irritated with me. Oh, you should meet my boyfriend, he’s much like you. You two would get along so well. His name is Aestus- that means tide in Latin you know-“She went on.
“Iris,” Dr. Nose warned gently.
“I know, I know, I just can’t help it you know.”
“Have fun, Raven,” he chuckled and walked the direction we came from.
I walked in and shut the door.
Iris danced into a little kitchenette area. It was kind of cute. There was a living room with a large brown sofa and a rather large TV. From the door, behind the length of the sofa, were two twin beds.
“You’re bed is to the right-“
“Thank you,” I told her softly, yet effectively silencing her. Instead, she gave me a grin so big, I swear she was all teeth. “I’m going to bed. Goodnight.”
“Night!” she chirped.
I faced the wall and opened the envelope.
Dearest Raven,
We, your parents would like to welcome you here. First, we would like you to know why we gave you to the human parents.
We had absolutely no choice. Your life was nearly ended so many times, that it was better for you that you were placed into the care of the humans.
We gave you to the people we did, because they could not produce any children. They had always wanted a child, but couldn’t have one. It was our mistake to not take into account that they were human, and you are not. What you are doesn’t really have a name, but you are very talented, and we are positive that you are very intelligent, despite the lack of school.
Secondly, we need to explain what is going on in our world.
We are hidden from humans for reasons like your case, but there is a secret (from the humans anyway) war going on. This war plays a huge part in our history, which hopefully you will soon learn. This war is between the vampires and most other supernatural species. It is imperative that you be careful about who you trust.
Love dearly,
Your Parents
