Chapter 23: Seeing Things?

I was so excited. They said I could go home today! Soon we'll be able to free everyone, I'll make sure of it! I knew I didn't understand how everything worked in the world, but I was 14, so was I really expected to know everything about the world?

I was given a fresh pair of clothes to wear. I went into the bathroom and changed into them. It was a loose shirt that was white with gold stripes horizontally with butterfly sleeves. The pants were soft, dark blue jeans that fit me nearly perfectly. I was given new, black tennis shoes with memory foam to help me walk. I brushed out my hair, which needed to be trimmed, or cut, and put in my favorite white headband. Then I walked out of the bathroom and saw Papa with Aphmau, both of them looking a lot better as well. I hugged them, smiling at their warmth.

"Hey sweetpea! Ready to go home?" Papa smiled.

"Yeah!" I giggled.

Aphmau chuckled. "We've got a surprise for you~"

I gasped. "Really??"

"Mmhmm~ But we're gonna eat breakfast first, at IHOP!" She said IHOP in her fangirl voice.

I giggled. "Yay! I missed it."

We all laughed, then headed out to the car. Papa opened the back door for me and the passenger for Aphmau. I got in and ran my hand over the tan leather seating and reminded myself about seat belt safety, buckling in clumsily, thankfully doing it before Papa made it to his seat. As he drove off, I smiled at the passing scenery. I missed this. I missed it so much. Everything was so peaceful and uplifting.

We pulled into IHOP and went inside. I ordered the least greasiest thing on the menu, doctor's orders. We caught up while eating. I told them about life in Tu'la, and they told me about the search for the other kids and me. After I registered it being a couple of years, I realized how much school work I've missed.

"I'll still be able to go to school right? I could catch up before school started!" I said confidently.

"Hon, that's in a month." Aphmau said gently. "You wouldn't have time."

"I should still try! I'll work my hardest!" I said determinedly. Papa chuckled.

"That's my girl!" He cheered.

I smiled proudly and finished my food. We left around 10:37 and I was dying to find out what my surprise was. When we pulled into the driveway, I excitedly headed towards the front door. Papa opened it and I gasped.

"WELCOME HOME, MELODY!" Levin, Kyle, and Alexis said in unison.

I ran up to them and hugged them. "Thank you, you guys!" They hugged me back.

"There's one more surprise, Mel." Aphmau said giddily.

I began to wonder what on earth could be better than all my friends here, when Papa pulled a black kitten out from behind the couch. I gasped and he handed it to me. It purred and mewed.

"He's all yours, what'll you name him?" He asked.

I pet him and thought a bit, then I got it. "I'll name him Nicodemus!" The kitten mewed and purred. "He likes it!"

"He sure does!" Papa chuckled.

Levin, Alexis, Kyle and I played with the kitten until it fell asleep. Emily put a blanket over its body and they crept away from it.

"So, what should we do?"

"We could go to the park." Alexis suggested.

"That sounds great! Can we go, Papa?"

"Yup, get your shoes on and we can eat lunch there."

"Hooray!" We hurried and got our shoes on while Papa packed lunches.

We all walked to the nearby park. Usually around this time I would be harvesting wheat or barely. Now I was with my friends and Papa. I felt like my life was turning around for the better.

"It's true what they say." I hummed.

"What's that?"

"You only know what you've got when you've lost it." I said softly.

Papa squeezed my hand and I smiled at him. When we reached the park, we decided to play tag. Alexis was 'it'. I sprinted away from her as fast as I could, laughing. I hid behind a tree to catch my breath.

When I turned I stopped dead in my tracks. There, standing in front of me, was Dad. He was spectral blue, and he smiled wistfully at me.

"Hello, Melody."

"Dad..."

His ghostly arms wrapped around me, emmiting warmth. "Oh my baby..."

I felt a lump form in my throat and tears blur my vision. "D-dad..."

"Shh, it's okay, now. I will make sure no one can hurt you, as much as I can. Not Fallon, her followers, anyone."

"Thank you..."

Dad smiled and disappeared as I heard Alexis' voice. I wiped away my tears and composed myself, pretending nothing happened by hiding around the tree. After Tag, we ate lunch and dropped Levin, Kyle and Alexis off at home. Papa held my hand; I yawned. Papa picked me up, even though I was getting pretty big, and put me on his back.

"Thank you, Papa." I yawned.

"No problem, sweetpea." He smiled.

I fell asleep on the way home, drifting into a dreamless sleep.
