As I saw Emily drawing, my mind drifted back, trying to remember my childhood with such happiness, just as Emily has now.
My childhood was never good. Me and my mother were poor, back in Italy. I was 4 years old when, my mom got a job in a very wealthy family as a maid.
*Flashback*
Sitting on the steps of my almost broken house, I looked at the children's playing in the garden. I wanted to play with them but they always teased me and shooed me away. They said I was poor and my clothes are dirty. I'll make their good clothes filthy.
I knew I was poor, my mommy said that god is testing us-she said that God is putting us in difficult situations so that he can see how nicely we overcome this situation and if we pass his test, he'll give us all the happiness we want.
I believed my mother, and always behaved in my best behaviour. When we didn't have food, I never complained, I knew God is testing us.
My mother said that someday everything will be good. I believed her.
"What are you doing outside honey?" I looked up to see my mother, standing with a small smile on her lips.
No matter how poor we were, she looked like an angel. Her honey brown hair was tied in a bun, but messed up badly. Her blue eyes were dull, but everytime she looked at me, I saw love and adoration for me, and her pink chapped lips always had a smile whenever she was around me, her pale skin never glowed but the sun made it shine for me. She was my mother, my angel.
"Nothing momma" I smiled at her, and she bend down on her knees in front of me and held both of my hand and kissed the back of it. I giggled.
"Honey! I've got a very good news for you" She said and smiled widely, showing her white teeths.
"What is it momma? tell me tell me!! Please" I stood up and jumped up and down, thinking she's got a surprise for me, like we're gonna get good food finally.
"Uhhuh! Nope not so easy devil, I want the pass code first" She said and shaked her head, making me squeal. I held her face with both my hands and kissed her cheek wetting it accidentally, she laughed and tickled me, which made me giggle more.
"Momma please tell me?" I asked her again, grinning at her.
"I got a job as a maid in a very wealthy family, and we're moving there, tomorrow" She said and smiled at me, a genuine smile but her eye's showed pain.
"We passed the test momma?!! That means we'll get food momma?!! And...and nice good clothes?!! And then I can play in the garden?! I can make friends then?!!" I asked excitedly, and looked at her with curious eye's. She gave me a painful smile and pulled me into a hug. I smiled and hugged her tightly.
"Yes..Yes sweetie. We passed the test" She wispered in my ears, burying her face in the crook of my neck, as I felt her tears.
I didn't knew that the news which should've brought happiness into our life's will turn around so drastically and tragically.
*Flashback Ends*
"Ellie, I want to slweep" Emily, voice brought me back from my thoughts. I looked at her and she was yawning, and rubbing her eye's with her tiny fist. I smiled at her and walked towards her.
It's been a week here, and as day's are passing me and Emily are getting close. I liked her a lot and it's a surprise she likes me too. I never saw Xavier after that incident in my bathroom and I avoided him as much as possible. He always went to work early in the morning and came back home late. I almost ran into him the other night but he glared at me and then made a disgusting face and walked away.
