Prologue

Melanie Forlise

Six years ago....

I ran from my house crying like mad. Mom and Dad were so unfair! I didn't do anything! I just accidently dropped the cup! Okay, so I get why Mom was mad. It was her favorite china tea cup that I dropped, but still! I can't go to ballet class because it slipped from my fingers! They were just so unfair! Tears streamed in rivulets down my cheeks that were nipped red from the bleak wind. I ran to the park. It was the only place I felt free...and well...wild! To be myself without anyone knowing or seeing me.

I climbed the huge oak and curled up onto a thick branch. My parents were abusive, and I mean very very abusive. They were alchoholics and beat me to the ground daily. I have the bruises to prove it.

I pulled my legs up to my chest and let the tears flow unchecked and heard nothing except my own wails, my mind wallowing in a huge pool of self-pity. I heard nothing since I only wanted to hear myself, but there was something out there to hear. When I finally stopped crying, I wiped away the remnants of my tears, my hand clenched tightly in a fist. That's when I heard it. The sound that changed my entire life.

I heard other wails, another person crying in a tree not far from me. I turned my head in that direction and saw another girl crying, just like me! I climbed down from where I had perched and walked to under her tree.

"What are you doing up there?!?!" I yelled at her. I was in no mood to make friends.

"What are you doing here!?!?!" the strange girl fired back. She lept down onto the turf and glared at me. She looked to be my age although I was at least a head taller than her. After all, I was big for a ten-year-old.

"My parents were trying to kill me, so I ran here to get away from them, " I answered truthfully. The girl looked surprised at my honest answer and harsh one at that.

"Mom and Dad must be going crazy right now," my conscience whispered.

"Let them! I don't care about them!" I fired back, effectively shutting it up.

"My sister was bullying me, " the girl answered, "My name is Alyssia."

We were silent. Quietly measuring the other up.

"I just wish I could fight back, " I said breaking the silence and looking away. "Another way so that I could fight back. To defend myself from my parents, and other people, " The other girl's eyes widened, then narrowed with a look of hard steel behind them.

"Then we should do it ."

We made plans. Every day we trained together here in this old park. We learned to fist fight and use knives, both in throwing and stabbing. Over the years, girls found out about us and joined us. Girls who were treated unfairly or had difficult lives like me, all found common ground. We became One.

My world changed after that day and no more was I the little helpless girl without a way to defend myself, the little girl who cried herself to sleep. I became the Warrioress and nobody, NOBODY will stop me from doing what I trained to do.
