“Hey, Sheena, you have someone you like right?” Laur asks all of a sudden.

Sheena looked up at her classmate from reading a pocketbook. “Yeah, I do have.”

“Who?”

“Of course I’m not gonna tell you.”

“Hmmm,” grumbled Laur. She saw Katilyn, who was close by. The girl was Sheena’s close friend and she was grinning. “Then why do you like him? Or, what made you like him?” she asked Sheena.

“He’s… active and friendly.” Sheena leaned on her study table with one elbow and stared out their classroom window, carefully balancing her chin on the palm of her hand.

“That’s—all?”

“Well, you can also say he’s courageous, intelligent, hardworking, wise, and…faithful.”

At the corner of her vision, Laur could see Katilyn’s grin getting wider. “Faithful?” she thought. Then like a light bulb that is switched on, an idea came. “It must be a guy who is courting her.”

Laur pushes her chair back, packs her things and says ‘goodbye’ before leaving school. Afterwards, Katilyn walked over to Sheena’s table. Her smile was still plastered on her face.

“You’re really deceiving,” Katilyn says.

“It’s not my fault that they allow themselves to be deceived,” Sheena countered. “Besides, it’s not like I lied.”

Katilyn smiled even more. “I wonder how things will become from now on.”

The sound of a bell echoed throughout the school. It signaled all students to leave the school campus and to go home for the day.

“Why don’t we go eat a snack before heading home?” Sheena suggested.

“Sure,” Katilyn says.

Meanwhile, Laur rushed to her neighbor’s house, banging on the doors as loud as she can. The door opened and she rushed in.

“What the—?”

“Derik, you have to do something now!” Laur shouted.

Derik sighed. “Take a seat.”

“But you have to listen to what I have to say,” Laur half-shouted while she sat on the couch.

“Keep your voice down,” Derik said from the kitchen. “My parents may not be at home but you still have to keep it down. Coffee or tea?”

“Oh, sorry. I’ll have tea. Thank you…wait. That’s not what I wanted to say. Someone’s courting Sheena!”

The noise from the kitchen stopped for a few seconds before it started again. After another few moments, Derik entered the living room with two cups of tea. He carefully placed them on the table before sitting on another couch across from Laur.

The teenage girl could swear she felt goosebumps crawling on her skin. Laur knew how Derik can be when he’s annoyed. It was even more scarier when he would get angry. Is he angry now?

“Impossible.”

“Huh?” Laur stares in disbelief. “Im—possible?”

“Yes,” Derik answers, taking a sip of his tea. “Sheena told me personally that no one is courting her.”

“Really? But—but she said that the person she likes is faithful.”

“Did she say that the person’s faithful to her? In the first place, Sheena is a tricky girl. She’s good with her words. Did you ask her anything?”

“Uh, well,” Laur mumbles. “I asked her to describe the person she liked.”

“And what did she say?”

“She said that the person she likes is friendly, active, courageous, intelligent, and uh, hardworking, wise and faithful.”

Derik inhales, holds his breath for about a minute and then exhales. “Don’t you think that all of those characteristics point to only one person?”

Laur froze, letting what Derik’s words sink in. “You were able to narrow it down to a single person that quickly?”

“It’s kind of easy when you think about it.”

“Who? Who’s the guy?”

“Don’t you think that—,” Derik hesitates for a moment and his face shows signs of pain. It was like he didn’t want to admit it himself. “Don’t you think Williams fits all of the descriptions?”

Laur is taken aback. “But you and Williams get along so well with each other. You’re close friends not only at school but also at church.”

“But he fits all of the descriptions.”

“How does courageous fit him?”

“Don’t you know that he’ll face anything head on?  Besides, there was a time that Williams saved her from being hit by a car.”

“Really? Wow.”

Derik looks away.

“If you put it that way, then it’s true. The descriptions do fit him except for faithful,” Laur points out.

“Don’t you know that he’s loyal to his friends?”

“I noticed,” Laur agreed. “On the other hand, you’re the exact opposite. You only socialize with animals and though you are really smart, you’re very quiet. You’re always being targeted by bullies, and—.”

“Hold on,” Derik cuts in. “I may be targeted but they never come back twice because they know that I can fend for myself.”

“O~kay. Also, you’re only hardworking when you need to be and you’re only active during church activities.”

“But that’s because—.”

“You’re too religious,” Laur cuts him off.

“And what’s wrong with praising and worshipping God?” Derik asks, ready for a debate.

“Nothing. Absolutely nothing,” Laur smiles. “Actually, I can say that that is one good trait you have. Always believing in the Lord.”

“Of course.”

“But apart from that, what are you going to do? The girl you like…likes someone else.”

Moment of silence, before Derik says, “I don’t know. I’m confused myself.”

On the other hand, at a fastfood restaurant…

“Okay, I’ve almost figured the puzzle out,” Katilyn says. “But there’s one description about that guy that I can’t solve.”

Sheena takes another bite. “You want me to tell you?” Her close friend nods. “Well, you see, he’s friendly with animals, he’s active at being inactive, he actually really is intelligent, he’s wise of when to keep quiet, he’s only hardworking when needed, he has the courage to fight off the bullies that target him,  he’s kind, and he’s—.” Sheena looks at Katilyn. “—faithful to God. That’s what I like most about him.”

“I don’t think anybody would actually guess the person you like,” Katilyn smiles.

Sheena smiles as well.
