Kara:
Ever since I was small, I've been able to read people. Not "read" as in reading their minds or anything, just what they felt at any given moment. I couldn't explain it. I just looked at someone's face and instinctively knew what they were thinking.
Right now, though, spoon dude's feelings were written all over his face and spelled one word: confusion. He was staring at me like I'd gone crazy. I ducked my head so as to not look suspicuous and pretended to concentrate on my plate. A few seconds later, deeming it safe, I looked up again. This time, he was the one who mouthed, "Door lock?"
So he'd gotten my drift. So far, so good. I nodded once, then started casually tapping two fingers of my hand on the table and then adding one finger more. Looking up, I saw that him tapping his fingers in the same pattern as mine. So he had again gotten my signal- floor 2, room 3. Hopefully.
A shrill beeping sounded, signal that dinner was over. I lazily got up with the others at my table, slouching back towards the doorway, and beyond that, a one-way path to solitude for the next few hours. I desperately hoped spoon dude knew how to open the door locks with that spoon, because I sure as hell didn't.
5 hours later:
I was sitting upright on my bed, contemplating my stupidity and praying that spoon dude had more brains than me. Did I have to send him a message today, of all days? Did he know how to unlock the doors with a spoon? A spoon, of all things? How much protection could that really offer? The boy's and girls' wings of the building were interconnected, so I didnt have to worry about him getting caught on the grounds, but what if he were caught in the dorm? Would he rat me out? Would he even come here tonight? Would he-
A very soft tapping sound was heard at the bottom of the door. I leapt up and ran to it. A faint metallic edge could be seen just above the lock. As i watched, it pried the magnets of the door lock, then promptly shoved the door open, revealing a face with pale blond hair. No alarms sounded, so presumably he had disabled them somehow.
"Spoon dude!" I whisper-shouted in joy. He gave me a pained look and walked inside.
"For the record, it's Nate."
"Oh... Well, mine's Kara. How'd you get here?"
"Long story. Now how do we get out of here?"
I put on my best thoughtful look, and gazed at the ceiling. "Let's see... are the cameras disabled?"
He gave me an incredolous look. "You mean, I came all the way here and now you're telling me that you dont even have a plan?"
"Oh, shut up. I'll make one up." I walked to the window. "Are the cameras out?"
"No. The guy currently watching over them is, though. His replacement comes in fifteen minutes, so your planning had better be done fast."
I grinned. While Nate had been talking, I had been thinking. And the plan I'd come up with ensured we'd be out of the asylum's reach in just that much time. "Do you think that spoon of yours can break through glass?"
Spoon dude frowned. "Please tell me you're not actually jumping out of that window."
Smart guy. "Sure, I am. Why don't you lead the way?"
"Ladies first. Anyway... so what's the plan? A diversion?"
Nate was actually turning out to be pretty smart. I walked over to the window. "Yeah. We break the window, set off the alarm, and run like hell."
"Guards in the corridors?"
I gave him a confused look. "Who said we were going to run that way?"
This time, the look he gave me agreed with the asylum's assesment that I was indeed crazy. "You... are going to break the window... and use it as a diversion... to jump out of said window."
Wow. Was this guy green or what? Well, he did get this far, so I supposed there was no harm in explaining to him. I turned back. "The people who run this place aren't idiots. They'll think of a diversion. But they'll assume we'll only get so far. That's one thing we can exploit. Their assumption that we won't try very hard. I mean, look at most of the kids here! They don't know why they're here, but it's the only place they've known. Why do you think I picked you?" I turned back to the window, knowing I had revealed much more about me than necessary, but there was nothing to be done about it. "Lesson over. Now can we leave already?"
"Fine, but once we do leave, I'm not leaving you till I get a few answers."
Oh, hell. I knew what those questions would be. Namely, ones I didn't want to answer.
Nate walked to the bed, wrapped his hands in a sheet and strode towards the window, stopping just beside it, out of the way of most of the shards if the window broke. I moved to the opposite corner of the room, watching. He grabbed the spoon in his wrapped-up hand and swung it towards the window. A sharp 'Crack!' sounded and a web of cracks spread from the point of the spoon's impact. Again, he swung his hand towards the glass, shattering it. His hand drew back, with tiny droplets of blood on the white sheet.
I grabbed a couple of handkerchiefs from the bed, stuffed them in my pockets, wrapped my leg in a sheet and motioned for him to move aside. When he did, I positioned myself in line with the window and aimed a flying kick at it. I felt my foot connect and drew it back, noting that nothing had pierced through the double layer of the sheet and my jeans. Looking back to see most of the window gone, I jumped on the windowsill and lightly perched on it. Nate was beside me in a second.
"What're you waiting for?"
I strained my ears, trying to hear the sounds of people in the hallways. "We need to wait until the guards come to this window and assume we're running in the corridor."
"And if they don't?" His face was grim.
I almost smiled. "Trust me. They will. I know, okay?"
