The Dinner ~Part 2~

"Dani!" I heard Malissa's voice shriek. "You came!"

She said it as if I had a choice.

"I wouldn't miss it for the world." I lied as I wrapped my arms around her.

"Hey, Daniyelle." My Aunt Layla said. As she said it I was expecting an 'aunt kiss'. You know those kisses on the cheek where it's slobbery and nasty; but nope, she just said 'hey' and took a sip of her wine.

"Hey, Aunt Layla." I said dryly.

"They're here!" I heard a booming voice say.

I immediately looked down so that a didn't have to interact with the person behind the voice. I guess he got the message because  he didn't greet me. He led me and my mom to the dining room. It was huge. The table could seat at least twenty people. There was another, regular sized table in the corner of the room. There were gift boxes on that table. My mom put 'our' present in the table. We sat at the table and my mom, my Aunt Layla, and Mayor Glover talked for awhile. They talked about dumb stuff, like income tax, politics, and things along those adult conversation lines.

"I'm so glad you came. I didn't want to be stuck here with adults." Malissa told me.

"I don't think I would be willing to leave you here." I said

"I don't even know what they're  talking about. Like what is Federal Income Tax Return?"

"I have no idea." We laughed. "So what did you want for your birthday?"

"I really wanted a new phone, mainly because mine is all cracked. I also want a unicorn case that I saw at the mall."

"Oh, well don't tell her I told you, but me and my mom got you red prom-like dress. It's really pretty."

Malissa's jaw dropped and a piece of lettuce fell out of her mouth. "Really?!"

After she exclaimed that, the table got quiet and everyone exchanged looks. My eyes locked with Glover's but I quickly looked away. He must've took that as a way to start a conversation.

"You haven't talked to me all evening, Dani." He said.

"Don't!" I exclaimed, until seeing the expression on my mother's face. "Please, don't call me that. I'm Daniyelle to you."

"But you call me Uncle Glover."

"No I don't! And I never ever will, so deal with it!" I hissed and then left the room.

"Excuse her." I heard my mom say, as she got up.

"No, it's OK, I'll talk to her." He then got out of the chair and made his way to the room I was in. When he was just a few steps away his phone rang.
 
*Bring Bring*

"I told you not to call me when I'm with my family."

There was a sudden silence until his voice boomed.

"No! You listen to me, Karyn! We'll handle the details later." He hissed.

I was confused; the only Karyn I knew was Chelle's mom, but I don't know why she would ever talk to the mayor.

"Fine! What do you suppose we do about this?"

I shifted my position, because for some reason I hid in the closet with fear that he was going to find me. As I shifted my position, I must've knocked down a chest from the shelf in there. It hit my head and I gasped. Everything suddenly went quiet. I tried to control my breathing so that it wasn't too heavy.

"I'm going to call you back, Karyn." I heard the click of him ending the call. "Daniyelle? I know you're in there just come out."

I shuffled to rearrange things, starting with putting the chest back on the shelf. I then walked out of the closet. As I walked out of the closet, he walked in. I didn't say a word to him. I walked back to the dining room where I saw my mom getting her coat, Malissa crying, and my Aunt Layla holding her. 

"I hate you! You ruin everything!" Malissa yelled at me.

"We're leaving. Come on." My mom said.

I grabbed my coat and said my goodbyes dryly. When we got in the car, I was expecting a lecture; but we just drove in silence.

"Mom, I'm-"

"Save it! I honestly don't want to hear it. I don't know what is wrong with you and your attitude lately but you need to fix it. You're not the same girl I raised, Dani. What happened?"

I didn't respond, instead tears filled my eyes, and I drowned in my thoughts. Zoning out the world.

I'm sooo sorry that it took so long to update but I had a lot going on with schoolwork and just life. I tried to make this as long and as informative as possible for the time being. I will try to update tomorrow because I might not go to school and... DONT FORGET TO VOTE, I REALLY NEED YOUR INPUT!!
