"I'm so booored..." My friend Cindy groaned, plopping down on the hot pavement. "Me too," said Ellie. I got an idea. "Guys, come here!" I whispered, leading them to the far corner of the playground. Away from all the other kids.
We all sat down and I grabbed a few sticks, placing them inside our circle. "Now, before you see this, you can't tell anyone about what I'm about to do. Okay?" I looked at my friend's to make sure they understood. They both nodded.
I took a deep breath and hovered my hand over the twigs with deep concentration. The other two looked confused, but still watched. A few small embers fell from my hand onto the sticks, before turning into a small fire.
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and looked at my friend's again. Their eyes were widened in shock. "How did you do that Emma?" Cindy asked. "I don't know really... It was something I just sort of discovered while collecting twigs in my yard."
"That's awesome!" Ellie exclaimed. Before I could respond, a shriek rang through the playground. A teacher ran over, "What happened? Are you girls okay?" She pulled us away from the flame and fumbled while trying to put it out with her foot.
I walked with Ellie and Cindy to another corner. "You know what a cool nickname would be? Ember," Ellie said. I nodded. "Has a nice ring to it." I said.
School was dismissed later that day. I went outside and saw my mom, so I ran up to her. "Hey Emma, let's get you home. Now." She tugged on my arm, so I had no choice but to follow. She didn't say anything on the quicker than normal ride home.
She told me to go to my room as soon as we stepped in the door. I obliged and sat there for a few hours. After a while, I noticed it getting very warm. No. Not warm. Hot, and smoke was coming through the bottom of my door. I knew what was happening. They showed us the signs of a fire during the fire safety videos at school. I started screaming. Nobody answered. I tried the doorknob. It was locked. I was stuck. The next thing I knew, I was blacked out.
