"I don't want to!" I screech as my parents pack my bag full of clothes and stuffies. Mom sighs and looks at Dad then at me. "James, we've been over this, we're only going to California for the summer. You'll be fine."
"What about Brian?" I ask, "I can't just leave my best friend!" Mom smiles and ruffles my hair. "You'll make new friends. I promise." I spit out my tongue and run out of the room.
"I'm not going!" I swear.
The next morning we sit on a plane headed to California. I watch as we leave New Hampshire, flying over the lakes and forests. After an hour I fall asleep.
"James, wake up Buddy." I wake up to my Dad's voice. "What?" I ask, wiping sleep from my eyes. "We're here." He says, unbuckling my seat. "Mmkay Daddy." I say, stretching. I hop out of the car and run to where my mom stands by the trunk. "Hi Silly." She says, picking me up into her arms and kissing the top of my head. I make a face at her. "Yucky kisses." She sticks her tongue out. "Fine. No more then."
"Noooooo!!!" I yell, throwing my arms around her. "Mommy I was just being silly! I love you."
"I love you too but I have to put you down now so I can get the bags." She sets me on the ground and I walk towards the house. I can see a big tree that has a porch swing. I squeal and run to it. Jumping up I am able to get on it. But it doesn't move. I groan and kick my legs in frustration.
"Do you need a push?" A voice asks. I look up and see a boy standing in front of me. He has dark brown hair and very pretty eyes. I giggle. "You're pretty. And yes please." He laughs and grabs the swing, giving it a big push. "Wheee!" I yell, clapping my hands. "Jump on!" I yell to him. He smiles and looks at the swing for a second before jumping up next to me.
"Hi Pretty Boy." I say smiling at him. He giggles. "That's not my name."
"Oh. Well what is your name?"
"Oli." I hold out my hand, which he accepts. "Good to meet you Oli, I'm James."
"How old are you James?" He asks with a smile. He has a good smile. I think. "I'm five years old. What about you?"
Oli crosses his arms and smiles at me. "Haha! I'm six!"
I pull my eyebrows together and stare him in the face. "Well, I'm gonna be six soon. So there!"
"I'm six now. So there!" I make a 'humph' noise and turn away from him.
"I'm sorry James. Please come back." Oli says, tugging at my shirt. I look back at him and wrap my arms around his neck. "We're friends now Oli."
"Best friends?"
"Forever. I promise." He laughs and wraps his arms around my tummy.
"Ok James."
*a few minutes later*
"Who's your friend James?" Mom asks, leaning against the porch railing with a lemonade. "This is Oli." I say. "Nice to meet you Oli."
"Hi James' mom."
"Oli, where do you live?" He points across the street. "In that house."
"Are your parents home?" Oli nods. "Ok, I'm going to take you home, James has stuff to do. I'm sorry."
"Mommy no! Let him stay!" I beg, with Oli adding in, "Please let me stay! I want to be with James!" When we quiet down Mom just smiles and grabs one of each of our hands. "Come on Boys, you can play tomorrow." We follow behind her slowly.
