Shakily, you put your phone away and hesitantly turned back to your binoculars. So this situation was bad. You reassured yourself that there was no way these two unfamiliar Gems could see you and they had no reason to come looking. Peering at them again, you listened to their conversation.
The yellow diamond-ish Gem did not exactly have the booming voice you expected from a giant, but you caught some strange bits and pieces. Words like "Earth", "last time", and "put it behind us."
But though the diamond one was much more prominent, you couldn't help your eyes being drawn to the other one. Although she held herself with the same sophistication as her companion, there was something much more whimsical about her looks. Her golden blonde hair seemed to come up in a cowlick as far as you could tell, and she was wearing some type of ballerina outfit with fanned-out sleeves that clashed with everything. She somewhat brought to mind a court jester, and that brought a warm smile to your face despite the situation.
But though you didn't know her, that pointed nose on that slender frame was eerily familiar. You thought about texting Steven, "Does Pearl have a sister?" But you didn't want to distract the Crystal Gems while they were scrambling to get here.
This yellow version of Pearl was chattering away in a rather nasally voice, which you found yourself enjoying--even though you could hardly understand a word from afar. Her body language suggested she was enthusiastically agreeing with the larger Gem, and you got the feeling that the giantess was her leader.
It was then that you heard something you certainly did not expect. The Pearl-like one stopped short when the diamond lady interrupted her.
"It's not all I'm leaving."
Clear as a bell you heard those words, and clear as day you saw the smaller Gem react. Taken aback, she spoke in a lower voice, probably questioning what her leader meant. You listened as carefully as you could to hear the explanation.
"...much troub...assistant.....failed......worth.........here."
You didn't catch the whole thing, but it did not sound good. You looked towards the Pearl-ish Gem, and your heart broke when you saw how she was wilting at the news. Legs about to give way, she reached for her leader and begged. But her companion stood there stiffly, seeming unwilling to change her mind. A few more words were exchanged, and the diamond lady turned and walked back into the finger of the hand spaceship, without the other Gem.
The fingertip closed up, the arm rose into the air, and it was soon gone.
You waited for a few minutes after it was fully out of sight before looking back at the Pearl lady. She was kneeling in the grass, staring up at the sky in disbelief. You felt a pit in your stomach. She really had been abandoned.
And you could not bear to see her alone.
You ventured out of the bushes and trekked through the weeds toward her. She did not even seem to notice you approaching--probably still processing what had happened. When you got within about ten feet of her, you decided to get her attention.
"Hello? Are you alright?"
She saw you and shrieked, leaping to her feet and backing up, only to trip and fall back down.
You slowly came closer, extending a hand. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. I just wanted to--"
"You stay away from me, human!" The Gem recoiled from your hand in disgust. "Don't you dare harm me! I am the beloved Pearl of Yellow Di--" She stopped, remembering what had just happened, and looked anxiously at the sky. "I mean...I'm...I'm..."
So she did go by the name Pearl? You supposed that made sense, noticing the round gem framed by the low cut of her leotard.
"She...she left you, didn't she? I saw," you admitted. "I'm not here to hurt you, I swear."
She rose to her feet again. "Then what reason could you possibly have for--Oh, just go! Get back to whatever it is humans do," she snapped, shooing you away with one hand. But she was hardly focused on you. She was rapidly alternating between appraising her new environment and checking the sky again, as if she expected her leader to change her mind and return for her.
"No, listen, I want to help," you told her, and received a very peculiar look. It was then that you heard tires squealing behind you. A purple ATV with a face was carrying Garnet, Pearl, and Steven through the field toward you.
The vehicle shifted back into Amethyst, who mumbled about how exhausted her "wheels" were, and everyone climbed off of her back.
You smiled at the confused Yellow Pearl. "That is, we want to help."
