"Chancellor Esteban, your visit is unexpected!"

Captain Samuel of the Imperial Guards walked along the bridge of the fortress. Across the hills, the masons toiled as they carried the gravel across the river, overlooked by wary, menacing soldiers.

"It has been far too long, the Queen grows impatient", snapped Esteban.

As the rippling sound of water as pebbles tumbled into it propagated through the breeze, the captain's face turned purple. He opened his mouth to say something, but stopped as Esteban raised his finger and pointed it at him.

"We shall double our efforts!"

"I hope so Captain, for your sake", replied Esteban as his lips broke into a sly smile. "The Queen is not as forgiving as I am."

"Th... the qu... queen is coming here?"

The royal guards hushed and stared at Samuel. Within seconds, the surrounding forest too quietened, for nothing travels faster than fear. The Chancellor did not wait any further. He climbed into his carriage and yelled out to the carriage man.

"Ve rapido!"

Captain Samuel's legs trembled as he watched the carriage drive away down the path, through the hills and towards the palace.
