Chapter 1:

My life just got hard. I, Carissa Mann, have had to move all the way across the country due to my father's new job. Plus, it's the beginning of my sophomore year in high school.

I mean, how can you do that to your only child? I had to leave my best friend Callie to also start her sophomore year without me.

We do have a bigger house and it is nicer. I always wanted a new house, but now I wish I didn't.

Tomorrow I start school and I am so nervous. I mean how can I survive this? I can barely live without Callie.

"Carissa, get ready for bed. You have a big day tomorrow." my mom said to me as she was walking up the stairs. I rolled my eyes, glad she couldn't see me. "Yes, Mom, I will." I told her.

I went to my room and put on my pajamas. A t-shirt and shorts. I sent a text to Callie telling her I would call her after I got out of school tomorrow.

After I text her, I washed my face and brushed my teeth. I then told Mom and Dad goodnight and fell asleep.

I woke up at 3 a.m. due to a nightmare. I was being chased by a giant man-eating marsh mellow. Yes, I know my dreams are very weird and I then soon fell asleep again.

When I awoke this time, it was by my mom. I still hadn't settled in all the way and couldn't set up my alarm clock.

"Sweetie, wake up. You need to be ready in 1 hour. Okay?" she said to me. I groaned and said " Yes, Mom, I will get up." So, being me I sat up and got out of bed.

I took my shower and then I put on a pink shirt and my dark-wash skinny jeans. I pulled my brown hair into a pony tail and applied some mascara.

When I reached the kitchen, Mom was just finished making breakfast. Pancakes and sausage. "Thanks. Are you or Dad taking me to school?" I asked my mom, while eating my delicious food. "I am taking you to school. Is that okay?" my mom asked me. "Sure." I told her.

When I was done, we headed out the front door and went off to the school by 8:15.

 *******

The school was huge and gorgeous. I could tell just by looking I would most likely get lost. I didn't know how I was going to survive without Callie. We always did stuff together. We were like twin sisters. We were never separated. Been best friends since kindergarten.

"Bye, sweetie. I love you. Have a good day." Mom said giving me a kiss on the cheek. I also gave her a kiss o the cheek and said, "Love you, too. Bye." With that I got out and shut the door. I walked up the sidewalk to the school steps, and then up the steps to the big front doors.

I pulled open the doors with a deep breath and went in. I spotted the office down the hall and made my way there.

"Hello, I am here to pick up my schedule." I said to the secretary. "What is your name, dear?" she said kindly. Usually secretaries are rude, but this one was pleasant.

"Carissa Mann." I replied. She looked on her computer and then I heard a printer going off. She got up and went to the printer.

"Here you go, Carissa." she said as she gave me my schedule. "Thank you very much..."I trailed off not knowing her name. "Mrs. Crane." she told me. "Thanks." I left after that in a hurry to get to my homeroom.

In the hallway I looked at the map Mrs. Crane gave me. I turned left towards the way my locker should be.

After about 5 minutes I decided to ask a girl with blonde hair about my age if she would know. "Hello, could you please help me find my locker?" I asked her. "Hi. Are you new here, because if you wern't I'm sure I would have remember you. I'm Rachel." she said to me, rambling on.

"Yes, I am new. My name is Carissa." I told her. "Well, welcome. Can I see your schedule?" she said to me with a bright smile. I handed her my schedule. She suddenly brightened even more if that was even possible.

"We have all our classes together. We should hurry though we have about 3 minutes left. I will show you your locker." Rachel said to me. She sure likes to talk, I thought to myself as she lead the way.

We reached my locker and I got out my books they gave me. Rachel the pulled me toward our class.

In the classroom she pulled me to the very back. "So, will you set next to me in all of our classes?" She asked expectantly. "Sure. I don't have anyone else. I couldn't bring my best friend with me." I said to her. "Well, I will be your first friend here then. At lunch we will find a good table. My brother is in high school, too. He told me where the good tables are." she said. I was actually starting to like this school and I just got here.

In everyone of our classes we set at the back. Soon it was lunch time and I was starving. Rachel dragged me to the lunch line and we each got a sandwich. I also got some fries and a Dr. Pepper, while Rachel got a bottle of water.

"Now, lets find us a table." she said dragging me off. At this school, like my old one, we ate outside on nice days. "Hey, what about the one under that big tree." I said pointing to a table under a very big tree. Rachel just shook her head no. She lead me to a table near a smaller tree and sat down.

"Why can't we set there? No one was a that table." I told Rachel, feeling annoyed and very confused. "My brother says, and I quote, 'Never set at the table under the big tree. The popular seniors set there. If you get caught setting there you're dead meat.' That's exactly what he said." Rachel told me. "Just watch."

Moments later a small boy who looked to be a freshmen sat down at that same table. Like, five seconds later, a big and loud group of boys came barreling over. "Hey, dude. What do you think you are doing at our table? Get your butt up." the tallest boy with blonde hair said. "Yeah, boy, get up." another said.

The boy quickly scampered away. The group of seniors burst out laughing. I felt sorry for the kid. He probably didn't know just like me. Thank goodness I have Rachel as a friend.

When school was out I called Callie. There was a 3 hour time difference so she was out of school. She answered on the second ring. "Hello." she replied in a boring tone. "Hey, its me! How did school go?" I asked her. "Oh, hey! I didn't realize it was you. It was okay. I hung out with Marcy." she told me. "Were you okay at your new school today?" she asked. "Yeah. This girl Rachel and I hung out all day. She was really nice. We have every class together. I met her before homeroom." I told Callie.

"That's good. I have to go. Bye!" she said. "Bu-" I was cut off by the line going dead. That was weird. Callie never ends a call like that and her calls are never that short. I wonder what her deal was? I was still thinking about that when the house phone went off.

"Carissa, it's for you." Mom called up the stairs.
