My eyes flutter open and I'm blinded by the light exploding through the gap in my curtains. What time is it? I thought. Slowly, I sat up stretching my arms and glance at my alarm clock. 3:38 P.M. Wow, I slept a lot. I snicker to myself.
Just then, there's a soft knock on my door, "Come in." I said scratching my head.
The door cracks open and my mother peeks her head in. "Good morning, honey." she smiles, walking in fully and heads over to my bed. Mom's wearing her work scrubs with her jet black hair tied back in a ponytail. "How'd you sleep?" Mom sits down at the end of my bed and pats my blanket covered feet.
"Pretty good I think." I rub the sleep out of my eyes with the bottom of my palm.
"You were taking such an eternity to wake up so, I decided to put your waffles in the fridge along with some scrambled eggs. You'll have to warm them up, of course, when you're hungry."
"Okay, Mom. Sounds great." She leans in, pecking a kiss on my forehead. "I love you. Got to go to work, I'll be back later tonight. Be good." she pointed her finger at me.
I slip on my fluffy pink slippers, brush my teeth, then head downstairs to finally eat. After warming up my breakfast, well technically lunch, I pour some maples syrup on my waffles, then some orange juice into a glass. I grab some blueberries, chop up a strawberry, and sprinkle the fruit on my waffles decoratively. Then, reluctantly, I place my plate and glass on the table.
"Aw. I forgot my fork." I mentally scold myself for forgetting it. Swiftly, I grab a fork from the kitchen drawer and sit before my mouth watering meal. I gobbled down the scrambled eggs hungrily. The sweet taste of maple syrup danced on my taste buds.
As I'm taking another bite there's a knock on the front door.
I set my fork down," I'll be back for you."
I peek through the peephole. Mia's here! I unlock the door and swing it wide open. "Mia! Come in. Come in." She walks in all smiles, following me to the dining room where I left my waffles.
"Do you want anything to eat that doesn't require for me to cook?" I ask. "like cereal?" Mia laughs.
"No, no I'm fine. I just had Chipotle before my Dad dropped me off here."
"Suit yourself," I say while taking my seat again at the table. Mia sits across from me and grins a toothy grin "What's that face for?" I mumble through a full mouth of eggs.
"You know what it's for," Mia says giving her eyebrow a wiggle.
I gulp, tilling head to the side. "Nope. I don't think I do." I say nonchalantly.
"Heelloo. Don't you remember last night?" My face is blank as I continue to chew.
Mia's jaw falls. "The rink, the cop, Aiden!" Mia practically yells, her eyes almost bulging out their sockets. I set my fork down softly and shook my head clueless.
"Leah, are you okay?" Mia touches my shoulder softly with her hand. "Are you sick?" her hand zooms to my forehead. "Did you fall and knock your head or something?" Mia's eyes squinted as she examined my face. "There are no bruises... are you sure you didn-"
"I'm sure, Mia," I say giving up the act. "I'm fine." I take her hands away from my face. "I remember." A chuckle escaping my lips putting her at ease.
Excitement fills the place of worry on Mia's face and she quickly grabs my hands pulling me all the way up to my bedroom. Mia kicks off her shoes and jumps onto my already ruffled up comforter, like a child, patting the space beside her. Oh, Mia. I smile, crawling onto the bed.
"Spill," Mia says, resting her elbows on her knees and her hands cupping her face.
"Last night," I begin. "was hands down one of the greatest nights of my life." Mia squeals and claps her hand excitedly.
"Yes. Yes. Yes!" Mia threw her hands up, falling on her back, kicking her legs in the air.
Suddenly, Mia stops and sits up absurdly giving me a curious look. "So... what exactly happened when you and Aidan parted ways with the rest of us, hm?" she says, eyebrow raised.
"Well..." I trail off, blushing at the memory.
The way Aiden made my heart skip a beat was amazing. Maybe it was the way his smile formed or the twinkle in his eye when he laughed. Whatever it was, it's captivating me.
"Oh go on Leah... spit it out," Mia says leaning in in anticipation.
I blush and bite my bottom lip. "Aiden kissed me." she gasps. Mia brakes with a radiating smile and tackles me. We laugh and roll around on the bed; our legs and arms twist and turn like Twizzlers. It didn't last long and we tumbled right off the bed.
"Umff."
"Oww." I grimace from the pain that shot up my back. "Um, Mia," I grunt. "Could you do me a huge favor and I don't know... get off me?"
"Of course," she says sheepishly.
We both crawl back onto the top of my bed. "He wants to go out to the movies with me."
"You're going aren't you?"
"Of course I'm going!" I fall back into the covers. "This is the first time a guy has ever, you know, showed an interest in me." I sigh. "Guy's don't really like me like that."
"Well, I mean there was Kyle."
"Kyle doesn't count." I snapped.
Mia giggles, plopping down beside me with her head propped on a pillow. She cheeses a toothy grin at me. "He was so in love with you,"
"Mia," I roll my eyes. "we were in the 3rd grade."
"but then he moved away," she says in a sad voice. "you were so heartbroken."
"I was not."
"Where to!" Mia pressed.
Mia shoots up and jumps off the bed. "Enough chit-chat. Let's go watch a movie!" she tugs the cover out from under me and draped it over her shoulders. "I'll make the popcorn."
We headed down the stairs and into the kitchen. "Popcorn is getting kinda old don't you think?" An idea pops into my head and I exclaim, "Ooo! Let's make brownies!"
"Good idea," Mia begins to dig around the cupboard for ingredients. "I've been craving something sweet anyway."
