Chapter Sixteen

Jake, Megan, Tucker, and the horses finally made it back to California at around 6:00 in the morning. After dropping the horses off, they got back to the house at around 7:00. Tucker was put in his kennel and instantly passed out. Megan changed into a sports bra and a pair of shorts and Jake just stripped down to his briefs. They got into bed and Jake put his head on Megan's shoulder. The two eventually passed out from the exhaustion.

Megan was the first to wake up. She opened her eyes and rolled over Jake to look at her phone. It was now 1:30 in the afternoon. She giggled when she felt Jake roll over, sending her over as well.

"I'm sorry, did I wake you?" Megan asked with a tease. Jake groaned and opened one eye. "I'm going to go check on the horses and see if Sami's doing okay. You can stay and sleep if you want."

"Hmm, okay." Megan leaned over and pecked Jake's forehead.

She got out of bed and put some clothes on. Megan looked at Tucker to see the pup still passed out so she decided to leave him with Jake. Megan walked downstairs to find everybody else awake.

"I'm leaving if anybody wants to come." Megan said as she grabbed her keys.

"Where are you going?" Erika asked as she Tessa came out of the kitchen.

"Checking on the horses. Going to make sure the new horse is doing okay."

"We'll come." Tessa chimed in.

Three girls made the hour drive to Lancaster where the horses were at. When they arrived, Megan noticed that Bella was halfway in the lean-to and her butt was sticking out and China completely in the lean-to. The new horse had a makeshift pen using the trailer as a shelter since Megan had an idea of building another pen and then building a larger pasture around the pens.

After parking the truck, Megan got out of the truck and immediately climbed over the fence. She walked in the lean-to and became very worried when she saw Sami lying on her side.

"Hey, big girl." Megan said as Sami lifted her head and looked at Megan. "Can you not get up?" Sami let out a soft breath of air. Megan felt the mare's legs and could feel how tense they were.

"Is she okay?" Erika asked as she and Tessa stood outside of the lean-to. Bella snorted making Tessa jump slightly.

"I don't know." Megan pulled her phone and dialed Jake's number.

"Hello?" Jake answered, sounding tired.

"Hey, I know you're tired, but I need your help and probably the guys too." Megan said.

"Why, what's wrong?"

"Sami's laying down and her legs are really tense. I don't know if she can get up on her own and I can't get her up."

"We'll be down there."

Jake finally showed up with Chance, Chad, and Cade. They walked into the pen to find Megan clipping two lead ropes onto either side of Sami's halter.

"How long has she been laying down?" Jake asked as he squatted down and rubbed Sami's neck.

"I have no idea." Megan replied as she stood up. "She was on her side when we got here." Megan had a suspicion about what was going on.

"What do you need us to do?"

"I need you three behind her and we need to roll her over and then push her to her feet. If I can't get her up, I'll have to call he vet or something." Megan lifted Sami's head. The three guys got behind her.
