The Second Chance

Everything was suddenly black. Scarlet couldn’t scream, she couldn’t hear, she couldn’t even smell anything. She was only aware that she was falling, and fast, hurtling in a direction that wasn’t even clear to her. After what seemed like forever, she could see a light. It was small at first, but Scarlet could tell that she was falling faster and she could see the light grew till it was surrounding her and then, she stopped. Scarlet hadn’t realized that her eyes had closed at the last minute. She slowly opened her eyes she was looking up at her ceiling in the entrance way of her apartment.

“That’s strange, I wonder how I got here.” She said out loud. Then she remembered.

Before:

She was mysterious to say the least; with her fine red hair and blazing green eyes. She was tall and desirable. She leaned against the wall in a dark alleyway between Fleet and Seventh Street in Chicago Illinoi. She worked as a journalist for the local newspaper.  She had a slim figure and her dark clothes made her pale complexion look even paler. She stood there anxiously as she waited for someone. She jumped a little when her phone rang.

            “Hello?” she answered it.

“Scarlet! I’m so glad you answered. I’ve been trying to call you for ten minutes now!” A man said on the other end.

“Oh,” Scarlet said looking slightly confused. “Sorry, I guess I have bad reception here.”

“That’s okay babe, I’ll be there soon, I promise.” said the man.

“Alright,” Scarlet said “just hurry up.” She was more than annoyed.

The man’s name was Devan. Scarlet had been seeing him for a little over a year now. They had met not far from where Scarlet stood, in a bar. They had met when Scarlet was twenty-one, still a girl in many ways and naïve; but Scarlet had been forced to grow up after her miscarriage and discovering that Devan was cheating on her, which he still was. In fact, she knew that’s why he was late. That is also the reason that she wanted to meet with him today; to discuss their future together, or lack thereof.

A short while after noon, a man with dark brown hair rounded the corner. Scarlet stood up straight and started walking towards him. His eyes were brown, rimmed with grey and he sported black glasses.

“Hey love, how are you?” He said in a low and mysterious voice.

“I’m alright. Are you ready?” Scarlet asked.

“Whenever you are.” he said, flashing a smile.

“Okay.” She turned and walked into a small coffee shop on the corner.

After they had ordered their drinks, they sat in the far back corner of the coffee shop, away from everybody else. All Scarlet could do was look at him. She thought about all of the things they had been through. All of the things he had put her through. Before she could stop herself she said,

“I know everything.” Her eyes went wide when she realized what she had said, but she continued. “I know about Diane and Tracy, all of them.” Devan just looked at her with a blank expression on his face, and that infuriated Scarlet. He did this every time she tried to talk to him about something serious.
