Chapter 1
When Serra awoke she the world was dark. She could see nor hear anything, but she could smell something metallic which she assumed was the cold hard surface beneath her. She tried to recall how she had gotten in this situation but her head throbbed as if there were millions of tiny hammers being pounded angst it. Last she could recall she was walking home from school with her childhood friend Tyler. They had been talking about... What was it? A movie? She couldn't remember but it seemed to fit, and it was as far as she could get to what she assumed was the present. She was suddenly shrouded in fear; where was she? How long had it been sense her last memory? Was she hurt? She tried to calm herself but attempting a check for all body parts. Intact head? Check. Fully attached limbs? Check... But it seemed that she was bolted down, blindfolded, and... Possibly wearing noise cancelling headphones? She didn't know. But what she did know was that something was up, and she didn't like it. Suddenly here was a new smell; perfume, and as it became stronger the blindfold and headphones were removed, revealing a white room and four people. Two men and two women. Although she didn't recognize the first couple, she instantly knew her parents.
"Mom! Dad! Where am I? What is this place?!" Serra yelled. Her mother burst into tears and clutched her father, who spoke slowly and calmly.
"Was the operation successful doctor?"
The doctor pulled out a clipboard and began flipping through pages clearly ignoring her father.
"Test subject 13 has received the radiation treatment. It has yet to show results. Although test subject 17 has begun developing nicely." Said the second woman, who had her hair pulled back tightly in a bun, and wore a navy blue suit covered with a lab coat.
"Test subject? Mom, Dad what am i doing here? Where's Tyler?"
Finally her mother spoke
"have you neutralized the threat? What about her friend... She was very close to him. Will she he to see him?"
Serra couldn't comprehend what was happening. Had her parents gone insane? What kind of threat did she pose? Her words couldn't seem to reach them so she was forced to listen.
"Yes that boy..." He said "they will be allowed to roam in our meeting room in a few days when he stabilizes. They are both frail the moment but we assure your decision to entrust her and her friend to us was no mistake."The doctor seemed to be strangely calm, which frightened her but she suddenly was overcome with sleepiness as the secretary pressed a button and she felt a pinch in her arm.
Serra had a rough dreamless sleep. She fought angst the shackles and and when she awoke her wrists and ankles were scraped and bruised. She was surprised when people in has-matt suits came in and undid the restraints. She was then escorted to a waiting room and told that subject 17 would join her momentarily. Now that she was lone she decided to do a secondary check. All seemed well until she untied her gown and checked her back in he mirror. She had two dark lined starting at the tips of her shoulder blades. When she tried to investigate further she was interrupted by the presence of a man with a box.
"Sorry for the wait but for safety reasons you must wear this ring at all times. Sorry for the inconvenience " the man then politely bowed and left the room. As the door was closing another figure staggered in and collapsed. Serra ran to the man and was about to check if he was all right when he got up and froze. Serra was shocked when she realized that it was her friend Tyler. His once wild hair had been chopped off and replaced with a short buzz cut, and he now slouched, rather then how he used to stand tall. He looked sad. He looked broken.
