As the day passed, second by second―minute by minute, Jaehyun resided at the baseball stadium, awaiting Armani's arrival. He checked the time on his phone variously, slowly getting more and more impatient. He doubted she would show. The game had already commenced and he had yet to receive a phone call from her, ensuring her advent. Why did he have to put up with it? Why did he let himself go through with it? Jaehyun has been there for her since after the day they'd met. It was as if Armani didn't appreciate that. Was it that difficult to make a little time for her best friend? Wasting her precious time with Jiyong every now and then could ruin her and Jaehyun's friendship. He wanted to prevent that―especially since it was her senior year.
Distracted by his own thoughts, he snapped back to reality to let four youngsters make way to their seats. He checked his phone at anew. 4:45pm. Where was she and what was taking her so long? Was he stood up? "Hey, sorry I'm late." Armani panted, directing herself towards her assigned seat. Jaehyun was contently awe-struck by her appearance. "Don't worry about it." He smiled, passing her a cup of popcorn. She returned the smile and shifted to her left, only to remark her favorite little sibling sitting right beside her.
"Since when do you like baseball?" She asked Mark, zhooshing his tousled hair. "Since never. It was just an excuse to get out of the house. My mom's having her friends come over." He said, taking a bite out of his hotdog.
"Nice save." Mark was never fond of family gatherings. What teenager was? However, at times, he would leave an exception for when his sister was around.
"Who's he? Your new boyfriend?" He slightly snickered. "He wishes. We're just friends." She replied as Mark shook his head disbelieved. Armani and Jaehyun were very good friends, but they would've never made a compelling couple. They shared the same similarities. Armani had always avoided those characters. Having almost everything in common with her significant other would just make the relationship uninteresting. She was flattered by his charm, his brown eyes, and his sense of humour, but they could sadly never be.
"Yeppeo." (Pretty.) Jaehyun said. Armani's head altered, misconceived. "Your ring. Where'd you get it?" He rephrased, chuckling at her expression.
Relieved, she happily responded. "Oh. Jiyong bought it for me. He proposed this afternoon. It all happened so fast. I didn't expect him to propose so soon." She vented. He couldn't focus on her words after the huge reveal. He tuned out, keeping a fixed stare at her silver lustrous ringlet.
"Neither did I." Jaehyun responded as if he just heard the crackling sound of his heart breaking into millions of pieces. Seeing the look of sadness on his face that he obviously attempted to hide, she took off the ring and slipped it in her jacket pocket. It was apparent that he still wasn't over her now. He ogled her side profile with narrowed eyes and crossed arms. The shaking of his leg slacked. With Mark slightly peaking at the two, he couldn't help but to have his suspicions.
"You okay?" He nudged Armani. Between it all, Jaehyun carefully took the ring out of her pocket as her and Mark spoke. "Yeah, of course! Never better." She sighed. At the moment, he didn't know what he was doing was wrong. Her commitment towards Jiyong was what he questioned. Jaehyun could never compete against him―from his dreamy eyes to his marked tattoos.
"You sure?" He asked, leaning in towards her ear.
"Concerned, are you? Or are you just tryin' to show off to your friends?"
"Just making sure. Look, I know I'm not supposed to but in, but something's a bit off with your friend over there. Is he on something or is it just me?" He asked as Armani laughed.
"It's just you. Thanks for your concern though." She giggled.
An hour after the game, Armani, Jaehyun, and Mark all went their separate ways. Armani had arrived home—parking her car in the driveway and shutting the door after making her way out. Her hands slipped in her pockets casually, until she realized the emptiness in her right pocket. Her heart stopped for second as if she had a mini heart attack. Her engagement ring went missing. There was no sign of it in her left pocket either. She panicked. Before heading inside her dwelling, she unlocked her car and checked the driver's seat, the cracks and the floor. Nothing was found.
