The sun had just begun to set, turning the sky a salmon pink. I watched from my bedroom window as the light of the outside world dimmed. My father wasn't home yet and, judging by the time, he wouldn't be home today at all. He preferred to work at night. That's not to say that spirits didn't come out in the day, but the night brought a kind of loneliness which helped to persuade them that sticking around wasn't worth the grief.
I looked through the glass as the sun waved its final goodbye and sunk below the horizon. I looked upon the photos that sat, framed on my window ledge. There was only one that I actually cherished. The rest were only there to fill the space and put the frames to use. I smiled down at my favourite photo, encased in a glass frame with silver detailing around the rim in the shape of a vine. It was a photo of my mother sitting in a rocking chair with me on her lap. I had my face buried in her arm and she was laughing. I used to love it when she laughed. I used to love her. She was the reason my cheeks burned red when I was embarrassed and it was because of her that I cried when I watched a sad movie. She was the reason I had a soul. My human half. The best half of me.
As I placed the photo back down on my window ledge I realized that the sun was long gone and I was standing in complete darkness. I ran my hand along the wall until I found the light switch. I flicked it and the lights shone to life, revealing a young girl just inches from my face. I jumped back, knocking the pictures off of my window ledge and I heard the distinct sound of the frames smashing. The girl who stood in front of me couldn't have been more than seven years old. She had a dark aura that clung to her tiny body. She was a spirit. An angry spirit. She stood, shaking, in a frilly pink dress with her arms facing forwards and her hands hanging loosely. Her dark eyes were circled and blank.
"I just want Ruby to play with me." She hissed.
"What?" I said, not sure if I had heard her correctly. Did she say Ruby?
"I WANT TO PLAY WITH RUBY!!" she screamed, running towards me. I held my hands out in front of my face as a reflex but her transparent form only shot right through me. When I turned around she was already gone.
***Just a slight warning the book is going to become slightly darker (not too much!) from this point onwards. If you are very easily scared then do not read on. Its not going to become all dark and horrible dont worry :) Until next time my Morticians x
