Students scrambled into class, chatting amongst themselves, each of them holding brown paper bags with the text "Lovey-Dovey Day Cards" written in different ways on them. Eventually, a scrawny kid with scruffy orange hair anxiously ambled into class, slowly making his way to his seat. His nose was quite long, but not too noticeable. He sat in the back of the room, he never liked grabbing attention. He took out a small plastic bag holding all the cards he wrote for the people in his class. One specific card stood out, which was sparkly and bright pink. It had the letters, "Princess Dee" labeled on it, and he sighed dreamily, wondering what her reaction would be when seeing the valentine.

As if on cue, Princess Dee herself entered her classroom with an adorable grin, her eyes lighting the whole schoolyard with joy. Once her foot tapped the wooden floor, everyone's eyes greeted her, and they cheered and whoopted.

Princess Dee was the most popular kid in 5th grade, but that's what made her so cool. She wasn't fake popular or mean to any of her peers -in fact she was the complete opposite when going to school. She loved attention, loved meeting people and loved hanging around friends. And everyone was Princess Dee's friend!

Except Dillard...

The only reason they weren't friends was because of Dillard and his poor anxiety issues. Princess Dee has always been interested in being anyone's friend, but when it came to Dillard, it was very difficult for her to continue a conversation with him. Dillard's throat would close shut every time she got near him.

She eventually thought he hated her, causing their friendship to fade away.

Dillard's heart began thundering, sweat slipping on his forehead. Why was he always like this when she was around? He couldn't even glance his way towards her, afraid he'll say something strange like he always manages to do. He mentally slapped himself, hoping he could puff up his chest filled with confidence and hand her his card like any normal person would. Unfortunately, his butt was glued to the chair.

All his classmates began passing out their Lovey Dovey Day cards, so he took a deep breath, standing up with shaky legs, he finally began placing cards into everyone's brown bag. He stopped by Princess Dee's bag, glimpsing behind his shoulder, and quickly dropped the beautiful card in her bag, hurrying over to his own paper bag, anticipating over what card Princess Dee gave him.

He snatched the bag with no hesitation, flipping it over so his card's could dump out, but nothing fell out.

He paused, thinking this was some cruel joke. He began shaking the bag upside down furiously. A kid across from him noticed his worries, and when realizing he didn't get anything, the kid chuckled loudly, pointing a menacing finger Dillard's way.

"Hey look everyone! String-bean didn't get any!"

Dillard felt millions of blinking eyes land directly on him. Suddenly those eyes appeared with a viscous mouth, each laughing at him, except for one pair of those eyes.

Princess Dee was the only one whom didn't laugh.

Dillard looked straight at Dee, his eyes enlarged with embarrassment. He zoomed his way out of the classroom, running behind a green trash can, hurdling into a ball and softly cried.

He remained away from his class for a while, until he heard the clicking of shoes rush into the same path he took. He heard a brief shout, "Dillard? Hey Dillard?"

Dillard peered behind the trash can, catching eye contact with Princess Dee. He zipped his head back into his hiding place, hoping she didn't notice him, but was majorly humiliated when seeing her sit next to him.

"Dillard? The teacher is worried about you." Princess Dee stated plainly, she sat on the floor of the halls, staring at Dillard's tear-stained face. "Have you been... crying?" She asked.

Dillard's back shot up, he wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. "No no, of course not!" He protested, but Princess Dee knew better.

She grinned soothingly his way, sending chills up his spine. Dillard laughed awkwardly, not sure on what to do.

"I forgot to give you this..." Princess Dee took Dillard's hand, placing a colorful card in his hand and clasped his fingers over the object. She beamed at him one last time before jumping up to her feet and skipping back to class in a bubbly mood.

Dillard watched her cute attire vanish from his hiding spot, until she left, he then glanced down at his hand. Unwrapping his intertwined fingers, he got a good look at the card she made for him.

It was a pink piece of paper cut into a heart, white crystals were glued onto the edges of the paper. Black perfectly cursive writing was printed on the card. It read, "For Dillard: I think you're really wonderful! You are like the jelly to my peanut butter sandwich!~" Underneath the writing lay two childish scribbled drawings of a cartoony jar of jelly with a smiley face and a jar of peanut butter next to it with the same smiley face.

Dillard knew he would be keeping this for the rest of his life.
