Heat circulated throughout the room, sweat forming on Phil Lester's forehead. Maybe it was because of the temperature that he felt hot and sweaty, or maybe the anxiety he felt. He wanted to know how his best friend Dan Howell would react when he opened his birthday card. Dan Howell, thought Phil as he opened the door to Dan's favorite bakery. How do I tell him how I feel? What if he doesn't feel the same way I do? What if he hates me forever? All these thoughts ran through Phil's ear as he smiled to the baker, tucking the birthday card into his pocket.
"Phil, welcome back! Come to collect the special order for your special someone?" The baker inquired.
Phil rolled his eyes and smiled. "He's only my friend."
"I was only teasing. He's more than a friend, though, isn't he?"
Phil thought for a moment before replying. "He is. He's my best friend. No - that word degrades what we have. It's... it's something special. A connection most people will probably never have. Trust me when I say this: if we were to split... I don't know. I don't want to believe the world would fall apart."
The baker eyed Phil. "But why not? You've been friends forever now. I believe it would!" Phil looked down at the ground. "You don't want to believe it to be true, do you?" Phil shook his head. "But why? Why wouldn't you believe it will last forever?"
Phil hesitated. "Because... what if we get tired of each other? What if one of us wants a family? What if we go separate ways?"
"Then you just do. It may be the end of an era, but not the friendship. That's what remains, even in the worst of hurricanes, is the friendship. The abstract nouns as English teachers call them. Oh, and, he'd better have a good reason to give me if he decides to pack up and leave... even though, knowing him, he will be sure to talk to you beforehand if any thing isn't one hundred percent."
Phil smiled. "Yeah, you're right." Phil gave a sad chuckle. "You know, I was originally going to give him this card." He grabbed the birthday card he had written for Dan and handed it to the baker to read it.Dear Danny
We met eight years ago and instantly, after our first Skype call, i knew you were the best person in existence. We've been through lots of badger poop together but we got out of it, together. I know things have been rough at times with the fans but we lived through it. You were so young and cute, it makes me think about what the hell happened to you :p . On a serious note though, please keep reading. I'm 30. You're now - gulp - 26! It's about time I ask you how you feel. I'm afraid you've changed your mind, or will soon, and will want to leave and move out separately. It breaks me to say this, but I'm scared. I don't want you ruining your future because of me. You might not think too much about it now, but I'm sure you will in the couple months to come. I've already started looking for a place of my own. You should too. It's all for the best Danny. Happy 26th birthday to my favorite ever person.
Phil :)"I've changed my mind now though," Phil said after the baker finished reading it. "You made me think... thank you."
The baker smiled. "Anytime. Now hurry up and take your butt and this red velvet cake home before he starts thinking you've left him!"
Phil grabbed the cake and left, having payed beforehand. he stepped onto a cobble road and headed out to a body product store. There he debated what scented candle to get dan, Surreal Incantation or Gingerbread Wonderland? He went with the first choice because not only was the smell enticing, but it was visually appealing too. The candle itself was an indigo and the glass was transparent with white swirls. Dan would love it; it fit his aesthetic perfectly.he bought it and headed home. Their home.
Phil opened the door to their apartment and walked in silently. Walking throughout the corridor, he could hear and see Dan attempting to play the piano. He walked to his own room, set the cake and gift down, closed the door and changed into his blue pug sweater, sweatpants and mismatched socks. He quietly moved the cake and gift to the living room, placing them on a table. He lit two candles, 2 and 6 for 26, and placed them on top of the cake. He found a knife and called for his friend.
"Dan?" Phil called. "Can you help me out in the living room please?"
"Hadn't you left? Oh alright, I'm coming."
Dan entered the living room, a look of surprise on his face as he saw what was there. A smile planted on his face and he ran to hug his friend. He embraced Phil and held him tight.
"Dan, careful! I could've stabbed you with... Dan? Are you alright?"
Tears escaped Dan's rather feminine eyes. "Thank you Phil, for everything. When we met, I was 19. Now I'm 26. These have been the best years i could have asked for, and it's all because I've had you to experience them with me."
At this point, Phil too was shedding manly tears. "Dan, I can say the same. No matter what anyone might think, we'll forever be what we are now. Please don't ever let me go, Dan. Please."
"Never Phil. Never," Dan assured him through sobs. "Come on now. Let's have some of this cake. Anime?"
"Yeah," Phil replied. "That's a good idea." Dan turned to face the tv. "Dan?"
"Yeah Philly?"
"Thank you, Bear."
"Thank you, you spork."The End.
