Ashley's POV
"Come on!", Ashley called out to her little sister Hazel. "We're already late coming home from school!"
"Who cares?! We're kids! We're supposed to have fun! She giggled. Although her sister was 11 years old, she would always act as if she were still 6. Hazel skipped along to catch up, her curly shoulder length, bronze hair trailing me hind her.
"Wanna race, Hazel?" Ashley asked. Hazel grinned. "Ya kiddin? Yeah!!! On yourmarks.getset.GO!" she said quickly and sprinted to the end of the sidewalk. When she reached halfway, she leaped in the air and continue to run.
That's when she noticed the deep crack in the pavement where Hazel had landed. That wasn't there before. Was it? she thought. She shrugged.
"Hey! No fair! You know your faster than me!!!" Ashly shouted and bolted ahead to catch up. Hazel was always the stronger one. She took martial arts and ran track (both of which she was the best at). Ashley however, was just good at art and was always the #1 student. Hazel was loud, always willing to do anything, and always taking risks. Although the two were exact opposites of each other, they loved each other more than anything and would do anything for each other. After all, they were orphans and were constantly moving from foster home to foster home.
"Hurry UUUP, you slow poke!". Hazel, if course broke the silence. "There's something really freaky going on over here.... And SUPER AMAZINGLY COOL AT THE SAME TIME!". Ashly jogged up to her bubbly and very bouncy sister.
When she saw what Hazel was looking at she let out a soft "Woh..." And brushed her blond hair out of her face.
Inside an alleyway there were two boys, there ages identical to the sisters, corned by bulky looking guards at gunpoint.
***********************************
Ashley wanted to help, but she was too afraid. The two boys looked vaguely familiar. One of them was a redhead with freckles and amber eyes. He was Ashley's age - she had seen him occasionally in school.
He had always been sitting in a corner at recess - sometimes even crying. The boy seemed weak, since he was always being bullied. Now, he had a look of just plain fear, like a cadged puppy. His expression broke Ashley's heart. Ashley always had the urge to stand up for the boy, but just ignored the situation, afraid she would loose her popularity. Occasionally, the boy would escape somewhere, where she later found was Hazel's school - where his little brother went.
Ashley stood frozen, her wide blue eyes locked on the men in black. She felt uneasy, like there was something else connecting her to the brothers. Whatever it was, she didn't like it one bit.
"Hey! What do you think your doing!? Hmmm?" Hazel stepped out and put her hands on her hips.
No! What was she thinking?!! Ashley thought. Being a total idiot, that's what! I have to grab her before she gets herself killed!!! But Ashley was too scared to move an inch.
Two of the men turned to face the two sisters. "Huh." One of them scoffed, "You really wanna mess with us?"
"Gladly!" Hazel balled up her small fists and got into a down and ready position. She was always bragging about her fighting skills and ready to take on anything...... but not this.
"Hazel! Get out of there! NOW!". Ashley said through gritted teeth, but Hazel stayed put. Wait a minute, the blond girl thought. Hazel had a mad crush on the redhead's younger brother! She's trying to impress him!
The boy was pretty cute. With his silver eyes, wavy black hair and engineering goggles resting on his upper forehead.
Ashley was pulled out of her thoughts. A chill ran down her spine by the click clack of a rifle being cocked. She shivered.
"That's the girl" one of the men hissed and the whole army turned towards the sisters. Ashley watched with horror as the same man lifted Hazel's chin with the long barrel of the rifle. Hazel's face went white. "Bet the doc would be thrilled to receive this", he gave a sickening grin. A few black and yellow teeth shown making Ashley want to barf.
Ashley's mind was whirling with questions.
Were they going to shoot?
Would they die?
What did they want?
WHAT WAS GOING ON?!!!The soldiers' attention was now trained on the two girls, and Ashley was scared as hell. They were innocent, for Pete's sake!
The freckled redhead made eye contact with Ashley who was hiding behind a trash can. Thank you. He mouthed, and whispered something in his brother's ear. The younger boy nodded and claimed a fire escape to the roof of a building and took off running, but the older brother stayed put. Ashley could have sworn that she saw a bright red spark for a second in the boy's amber eyes.
She turned her attention back to Hazel who's face pleaded for help. "Forget about the girl", someone said. "We had direct orders and one of the boys is gone!"
All of the soldiers turned back to the redhead who's freckled face suddenly turned bright red with determination and fury. Ashley hoped both brothers would be OK, but she locked this incident in the back of her mind along with other traumatic memories that made no sense to her. Without thinking she grabbed Hazel's wrist and bolted towards home.
