The stopped on the side of the road tossing the loose dirt up into the air like a cloud. Ash and I walked up towards it wondering what kind of people would be awaiting us in the blue monster they called a ride. we jogged our way to catch up and when we did, we heard a voice shout from the passenger window
"Well hey ya'll!" a girlish voice chirped. A middle aged women stuck her head out the window with the biggest grin on her face. "where are ya'll headed?"
"Alaska." Ash said with a smile. "we just would like a ride just a little north. that's all."
"Huns, I can get ya'll even better. The boarder. Hop in"
I reached out and opened the rear sliding door and climbed in scooting over across the seat allowing room for Ash to sit beside me. I hadn't noticed the driver until I got into the van, but he was a slim man with a thick beard and big black glasses. He turned his head and nodded in our direction.
"This is Grant my husband, and I'm Mary Lain, but everyone calls me Malay for short."
"I'm Ashlyn, but everyone calls me Ash." Ash looked over at me.
"and I'm Elijah." I add.
Well it's nice to meet some younger travelers!" Grant chuckled putting the van in drive.
The van had some trouble starting, but once he got it moving it glided like any other car. I had my hands resting my lap trying to put myself at ease in order to act natural, but I was confused when I noticed Ash.
Ash's face was red and her forehead was sweating. Her hands were fidgeting around and she was biting her lip, so literally she was showing all the signs of being nervous. I was so confused about her, she came along with me for really no reason. She can be a really spur the moment kind of person, but once she finds herself in a situation, she acts as though she has immediate regret.
Ash notices my staring and tries to hide her nerves, but she knows it's pointless. I shift my glance from Ash to Malay and Grant. The couple was focused on picking a good song that was entertaining for everyone.
"do ya'll like country? or are ya part of that new rap generation?" Malay questioned without turning her head towards us.
"Country is just fine" I responded lying. Country music is nice, but it all sounds the same to me, and really, its not too impressive.
Ash seemed to be settling down, but I wasn't sure. Her hands were still constantly on the move. I reached out and grabbed her hand to see if it would calm her.
Her hands stopped suddenly and her eyes glanced my way. I awkwardly avoided eye contact. I planned to pull away, but I felt it would calm her more if I held on. My grip tightened and she grabbed my hand back.
I could see a smile form in my peripheral vision.
