Upon the conclusion of this years Roland Garros, there are two that I have gathered. First: Nadal will likely go down as the greatest clay court player of this generation and possibly ever. Second: Watch out for young gun Latvian Jelena Ostapenko.

At the beginning of Nadal's tournament, the fairytale and record-setting 10th RG title was seemingly well within his reach. His title chances doubled as soon as his potential draw was released, as he had beaten many of his possible opponents many times before. It was only a matter of time before he would reach that 10th title, and reach it he did. With an emphatic 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 trumping of Stanislas Wawrinka, he had finally captured La Decíma, The Tenth. And with that title he also put himself in the record books for life.

Meanwhile, looking through the other scope at the women's side, our eyes rest on Latvian sensation Jelena Ostapenko. The moment she struck the backhand winner down the line in an upset win over heavy favorite Simona Halep, a look of glee and joy danced across her face. At the start of her tournament, unlike Nadal's, her chances were shrouded in an impossible cloud. Ranked just inside the top 50 and struggling all year with consistency, Ostapenko wasn't projected to even make it past the third round. However, she defied all odds and did just that. The fact that she managed to keep all the emotions and consistency under control throughout two weeks of play is impressive. Even more so impressive is the fact that she brought her very best being down 0-3 in the third to Halep. But she dug in, came back, and did something no other Latvian has ever done; win a Grand Slam title. As a bonus she has become the highest ranked Latvian female tennis player ever, taking over Sevastova's position as the top ranked Latvian. For all Latvians, this victory will remain fresh in their minds forever.
