“We should double braid her hair!” Violet spat out. She was always spouting out random things. I laughed at her randomness. She’s weird I guess that’s why we’re friends.
“No! We should put it in a messy side bun!” Emehlia countered. The two nineteen year old girls were always arguing, even over silly things like what kind of helium balloon we should buy. I silently laughed at them, they humoured me. Maybe that’s why I keep them around.
“Ophelia, Ophelia?!” someone shouted, snapping me out of my thought bubble.
“Yes?” I dragged, my tone of voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Seriously bro, you’re always spacing out, but anyways we wanted your opinion on what to do for your make up.” Violet said, giving me a funny look. Me being me, I just rolled my eyes in response, and then it dawned on me.
“Uh I don’t really know, but I am curious. What did you guys decide to do with my hair?” Though I knew Emehlia’s idea wouldn’t work.
My straight, waist length red hair was too thick and untameable. And frankly, my hair made me look like a strawberry with my forest green eyes and freckles.
“We’re going curl it.” Emehlia stated plainly in her thick Irish accent. Though because of her accent, it didn’t really sound plain. In that moment I was so confused, what happened to the other two ideas? I shrugged it off, knowing my other blue haired friend would scold me if I argued, specifically because Violet knows I hate my hair being curled. So in the end, we decided to go with light eye makeup and foundation, and nude lipstick, as it apparently compliments my semi pale skin.
Just as I finished putting on a sea green coloured knee length dress with my favorite white leather jacket, the doorbell rang. I went to get up and go answer the door but my two crazy friends giggled and raced down beating me to it. I froze for a second, as I knew that meant trouble. Making my way down, I paused. I was just about to reveal myself to the person at the door when I heard Violet say something despicable.
“Yeah, sorry Will, she went out with some guy saying they were gonna have some fun.” Will’s deep, mesmerizing hazel eyes evident with sadness, instantly dropped to the ground. Fortunately for me, Emehlia couldn’t keep a straight face, and fell to the ground laughing, clutching her stomach.
He quickly gathered himself together, and furrowed his eyebrows, glaring at Violet. I looked down; feeling embarrassed, and shuffled my feet. Will then turned towards me and smiled, so I looked back up and chuckled.
“Well shall we get going?” He asked, and I nodded excitedly. He opened the door waiting for me to pass through, and as I did, I felt a weird sense of déjà vu.
“Is everything alright Phel?” He asked as we got into his truck.
“Oh, yeah I’m just a little embarrassed because of my friends.” I said, quickly coming up with a lie. I hated lying to him, it felt so wrong, so I decided to quickly change the subject. He nodded.
“So what are we doing?” I asked curiously.
“We’re having a bonfire.” He answered simply, and we soon arrived at the Thompson Forest.
“We have to walk the rest of the way,” Will commented opening the truck door for me. He is so sweet.
“It's fine, you know I love walking.” I quickly grabbed his left hand, intertwining our fingers. As we walked into the forest, I started swinging our arms, listening to the wolves howling to the Man in the Moon. I am so glad I wore my combat boots tonight.
As we arrived in this nice clearing, I still couldn’t shake that strange feeling of déjà vu. Something wasn’t right, I just could tell what.
“Here we are.” He said, motioning to the clearing, smiling. I noticed there were a few logs surrounding a circle of rocks with a teepee of sticks in the middle, and on one of the logs were a few big, fuzzy blankets and a picnic basket.
“I brought some fruits and sandwiches if you want to eat.” He offered, grinning down at me like The Cheshire cat. I smiled up at him and kissed him on the cheek.
“Thank you Will, I love this.” I was so lucky to have someone who loves and knows me as much as he does, but as heartwarming and comforting it was, I still felt like something bad was going to happen. Will grabbed my hand chuckling and pulled me to one of the logs and sat me down after covering it with one of the blankets.
“You’re welcome Ophelia. I like you.” We always said I like you instead of I love you because we felt we shouldn’t say it until we knew we truly meant it, since we haven’t been together for long, though we have known each other for at least 6 years.
“I like you too Will, but it is a little cold, do you think you could pass me one of those other blankets?” I asked cheekily.
He quickly nodded and a couple of seconds later he sat back down with the blanket, some marshmallows, and some skewers, wrapping the blanket around me. I had to restrain myself from jumping up and hugging him since I didn’t want to drop my blanket. Then randomly, an idea popped into my head.
“Have you ever just wondered about everything? Like, all that’s out there, or how the big bang theory and the theory that god created the world both don’t make complete sense? Or even about aliens?” I rambled and Will just looked at me like I was insane and lightly chuckled, shaking his head.
“You know what? Here, just roast a marshmallow.” He grinned funnily and handed me a skewer and marshmallow.
“Alright, but don’t blame me when things get messy.” I warned. Marshmallows can get very messy, despite how hard you try to keep clean. I’ve never eaten a roasted marshmallow without getting it all over my face or on my clothes and in my hair.
In the end I gave up trying to eat cleanly and got it all over my hands, lucky we had some water to wash it off, so we decided to stare up at the stars.
“Look, there’s the Big Dipper! Oh and there’s Aquarius!” I pointed out excitedly. Will and I were laying down on a blanket, my hand resting in his.
“Where did you learn all about astrology and stuff?” He asked in awe. I chuckled, the memories flowing from my brain.
“When I was younger, my mom was really into astrology, so she always took me stargazing,” I explained, “so I guess over the years I learned a few things.” I smiled at the memory, wishing she was still alive. A few years back she died in a plane crash and her body was never found. All of a sudden I heard Will gasp.
“Look! A shooting star!” Hearing that instantly made me close my eyes and make a wish, I guess it sort of just became a habit.
At almost exactly the same time as I opened my eyes, I saw another shooting star...and then another? Will looked at me with a confused expression. Then soon enough it was raining shooting stars.
“Weird.” He commented, and we instantly looked at each other, knowing something is wrong, and we stand up in fear, ready to run at any second.
“What the hell is going on?” I shouted fearfully,as it seemed to get louder and louder. Soon enough it was so loud our ears started to hurt.
“Come on! Let’s go, we need to get out of here.” Will shouted in a panic. He quickly grabbed my hand and started running towards the truck. I kept stumbling over the roots of the surrounding trees as we ran, trying to not lose Will.
Finally we made it to the truck, and we stopped for a quick second, our hands on our knees, panting out of breath. Quickly we regained our posture and swiftly climbed into the truck, slamming the doors shut. As we drove away, sitting in awkward silence, we noticed that some cars had crashed, and that’s not even what really got us freaking out and worrying. It was the fact that some of the cars had huge chunks ripped from them, and some of the people from the crashes were laying on the ground with their heads torn off. My eyes instantly widened, my heart started pounding a 1000 beats a minute, and I got a nauseating feeling in my stomach. I couldn’t help but stare at the headless bodies in terror. Though the worst part was that instead of feeling sorry for them, I couldn’t stop myself from wondering about what happened to the heads, and what could of done this.
“What the heck could have done this?” Will wondered aloud, voicing my thoughts.
“I really don’t know Will, but whatever this is, we will get out of it al-” I got cut of mid sentence by a huge red alien creature landing on the hood of Will’s red Ram truck. I screamed in fright, holding onto the seat belt for dear life as we spun out of control. The next thing I knew, the gigantic, boney, red hand of the alien, with long, blood covered, sharp nails, tore right through the roof, ripping Will out of the truck, seat and all.
“Will! No!” I cried out. I was frozen in fear, and no matter how hard I tried, my body just wouldn’t move. I cowered and covered my head and eyes with my arms, whimpering as the scaly alien let out a loud roar.
Slowly and cautiously, I uncovered my eyes, and they instantly widened, fear evident on my face as I saw the most horrid sight I have ever seen. In front of Will’s now beat up truck was the alien, and in one hand was Will’s head, his body in the other, the alien was staring right at me. I choked out a muffled cry, and panicked. My hands were shaking uncontrollably as they fumbled to undo my seatbelt. It quickly snapped undone, and I ducked under my seat, crossing my fingers as tears silently poured down my cheeks, wishing the alien would walk away.
I slowly peeked my head up after a couple of minutes and noticed a few more aliens had arrived, wandering around the streets.
“Come on Phel, you can do this,” I whispered to myself, “you just have to sneak past the aliens and get to your house. Easy.” I encouraged myself, my heart racing so fast, I swear it skipped a few beats. it didn’t work very well, but I knew I had to do it. So as quietly as possible, I climbed out and looked around. I released my breath, that I didn’t even realize I was holding, as all the surrounding aliens were all facing away from me.
“This is it, I can do it.” I chanted in my head, and I took a leap of faith. As quickly as I could, I sprinted towards my small three room, one floor house. Luckily we were close to my place when we crashed. Just as I was about to grab my door handle, I felt somebody grab my shoulder.
I spun around quickly ready to punch whoever it was when they spoke up.
“Ophelia! Lia it's me, Emehlia! Vi is with me as well! When we saw what was going on, we were so scared, we were worried something happened to you and Will! I’m so glad you’re okay!” She rambled, and I instantly relaxed as I realized who it was. But at the mention of Will’s name, my eyes saddened, and I looked at the ground, tears forming in my eyes. Violet walked up, and I was immediately engulfed in a group hug.
“I’m so glad you guys are still alive too, but something did happened” I whispered to them depressingly. And they instantly looked at me worriedly, noticing Will’s absence.
“What do you mean Lia? What happened?” Violet asked me worriedly.
“Will is, w-well, h-he’s dead.” I whimpered, stuttering, and I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to force the tears away, and the two people I had left hugged me tighter, consolingly.
All of a sudden the ground started to shake a bit, and we heard a few loud roars. We spun towards the sound and saw eight large aliens, even bigger than the last ones I saw, storming right towards us. Once again I was frozen in fear. “Oh my gosh, we’re gonna die!” I panicked in my head.
“Come on Ophelia! We need to go!” I heard someone shout, and felt them tugging me away. I instantly came to my senses and realized it was Violet.
“Come on girl! What’s gotten into you?!” She whisper-shouted at me once we found a place to hide.
“What happened to the girl who isn’t afraid of anything? Where is the girl whom was the bravest girl in the world and didn’t even cry when her parents died?!” She continued, then Emehlia jumped in.
“Cut her some slack Vi! She just lost one of the only people she has left!” Em spat at her.
Suddenly I started to get dizzy. My vision was fading quickly, as was my hearing. I felt so scared, as I could hear the aliens seconds away from us.
“Ophelia! Phel! Lia, come on, we’re gonna be late for school!” I heard someone faintly shout, and that’s when I woke up.
Startled, I fell out of my bed. Violet looked at me sadly.
“Look, Ophelia, you need to get up. You can’t waste your life away just because Will died in the crash, You’re lucky you survived.”Sometimes things happen
