Now for the real story...
Sighing, I trudged home wearily, my backpack filled with what was left of my school days- the summer would be hard, occupied by hot days and no AC, as well as the kids in the neighborhood teasing the weird girl. A few strands of dark, raven-black hair drifted in front of honey-tinted brown eyes and I swept them away as I climbed the stairs to my home in the apartment complex we could just barely afford. As I entered the door, I saw a familiar sight- Mother, depressed, her face buried in the couch she slept on, and my baby sister, Kimberly, crawling around on the floor, a bright sprinkle of blonde hair barely growing on top of her head and her green eyes smiling up at me.
“Come on, Kimberly,” I cooed softly as I lifted the infant into my arms and carried her to the room we shared. Since Dad died Mother had been slacking on her parental duties- I took care of Kimberly. I’m only eleven, and just completed my last year of elementary school. Placing Kimberly in her crib, I set down my bag on the bed and left the room once more, the door quietly clicking closed behind me. The keys to our slot in the mailbox were sitting on the coffee table, where I left them yesterday. Snatching them up into my hand, I left the house once more, hugging my jacket closer to me as I pocketed them. The dreaded daily walk to the mailbox was when most of my tormentors called me out. Today, though, no one awaited me. I grabbed the mail and began to make my way back, only to have my hope demolished a moment later.
“Oh, look who it is! School’s out, Death Princess,” the main tormentor- a ginger named Jimmy Harrelson- called out. Ignoring him, I lengthened my stride. At first, he’d liked me, but when I blatantly ignored him he got angry.
“She not in the mood today? Well, she is half-orphan, after her daddy drove himself off the road just to stay away from her,” another called out. At that, I turned around. The five of them stood just behind me and now began forming a circle around me.
“She looks mad!” The smartest of them called out- I say smartest because he usually doesn’t say anything, and when he does it’s accurate.
“Blimey, the girl’s sensitive about her dad, just like her mum,” Jimmy declared cruelly. I let out a frustrated roar and stamped my foot. Dust and wind whirled up from where I stepped and sent the five of them reeling backwards. Shocked, I slowly backed up and then ran back to my house.
“What just happened!?” Someone shouted as they recovered. I closed the door and locked it, racing down the hall and whipping open the door, only to be shocked further- there was a man in my room.
“Who are you?” I asked quietly. His blue eyes twinkled and his long gray beard fell down his chest over velvet robes. He turned slowly toward me from where he’d been looking out the window- so he saw the wind thing… Whatever it was.
“My name is Albus Dumbledore. You are Ravina Primrose Ellis, correct?” He asked. I slowly nodded- how did he know my entire name? He nodded thoughtfully before continuing, “Tell me, Ravina, do you believe in magic?”
“I-I don’t know,” I stammered, uncertain after what I’d just done myself. He raised his eyebrows for a second, outlining the wrinkles in his weather-worn face.
“I am headmaster of a school known as Hogwarts. You have shown that you have magic in you, Ravina- at Hogwarts, you will learn how to wield that power correctly, so that you don’t hurt anyone. The school starts in the fall, but I know of a place where you can go that you will be understood and taught a little. Would you like to come with me?” Dumbledore offered. Surprise rifled through me, as well as uncertainty- magic?
