The tall city walls enclosed a jumble of thatched and stone houses, which in turn enclosed the imposing stone castle. The fortress stood in the centre of the city, looking down on all below.

Had you passed the castle on this particular day, and looked up its sheer face, you would've perhaps seen a face at one of the highest windows... But then again, this castle was so tall you would've received a hard time seeing even the lowest windows, so maybe you wouldn't have seen the face, but that fact did not deny it's presance.

"It's just not fair," pouted the boy at the window, as he surveyed the hustle and bustle of the city below,

"What's not, your Majesty?" asked the servant, who stood obediently in the corner of the room. The young king turned towards him,

"Magic, that's what," he said. The servant ducked his head at the mention of the word, allowing the king to continue,

"I mean, why should we toil? Why should we righteous folk abide such devils?" he paused and turned back to the window, "My father was foolish, he thought magic was a good thing, he even was friends with some sorcerers, awarded them positions of power for the brave deeds they had done for the kingdom.  How I despised him!"

"Your... Father, sir?" asked the servant.

"No you fool," snapped the king, "One of my father's knights...had a funny name...umm....  Gryffindor! That's it! Sir Godric Gryffindor.  I knew he was trouble from the moment I set eyes on him, traitorous little sod that he turned out to be..... Him and that other one, oh, he had a strange name as well, now what was it?"  the king mused. The servant listened to his master's mumbling for a moment, before saying,

"Are you perhaps thinking of Sir Slytherin, your Majesty?" he ventured. The king looked up,

"Yes indeed I am.  Salazar Slytherin. I remember him now...He was the one who tried to have me killed when I first came to the throne.  With my father's laws still in place, I couldn't have the snake executed..." he paused again, "Banishment was too good for them both,  I posted an one thousand gold piece reward for either of them - they'd be fools to come back here," he finished.  The servant nodded,

"Indeed they would, Sire,"

Elsewhere in the city, a tall traveler leaned against one of the city walls, casually sipping a gourd of water. He watched from beneathe the hood of his tatty emerald green cloak as the desperate man on the street corner called to passers by that he would preform an amazing feat.  As a suitable audience grew around him, he grew bolder,

"I will now control this snake with the power of the mind!" he cried. The spectators gave a few half hearted cheers as the man opened a round wicker basket and raised a small wooden flute to his lips. As the incoherent melody filled the air, the head of a lime green serpent poked up out of the basket, clearly unused to the daylight, the traveler shook his head.

You have fallen on hard times, my friend.

Hello? Who's there?

A friend, I assure you. This man has done you wrong, you should not be used as a form of entertainment.

No, I should not!!

The traveler smirked,

Strike him. Strike him, and have a better life, come, listen to my voice...

He watched the snake rear up in the basket and begin swaying back and forth slowly to the awful music the man was playing on his flute.  As the audience clapped with growing enthusiasm and the music stopped the snake stopped swaying.

Now?

The traveler in green grinned.

Now.

The serpent leapt forwards, it's fangs bared.  Then all of a sudden three royal guards came racing around the corner to see what was going on.  They spotted him. Just as he tried to slip into the shadows his hood fell and his cloak flapped open, revealing the silver snake which coiled across his chest and his pale skin. He looked toward the guards, his black hair falling over his bright green eyes. The guards recognised him instantly,

"SALAZAR SLYTHERIN!!" roared the leader, drawing his sword. The activity around them stopped and soon hushed voices filled the air. Slytherin took a few steps back from the advancing guards,

"You are under arrest," said one. Slytherin backed away slowly, drawing one of his swords from the scabbards strapped across his back.

Run, friend, I will buy you some time!

Slytherin shook his head.

No, they'll kill you!

He saw the snake slithering towards the nearest guard,

I am close to death already... Now go!

The snake drew back and sunk it's fangs into the man. As the others looked around, Slytherin ran, but not before casting,

"Engorgio!" a flash of white light flashed from the tip of his wand and the snake was transformed into a serpent five times it's normal size.

"Quickly, somebody, after him!!" one of the guards shouted. Slytherin soon heard heavy footfalls dogging his every step. He raced through the busy city market place, ducking under moving carts and vaulting over stalls, making sure to knock obstacles into his pursuers' path...
