A knock on the door awoke the boy, sun filtering in through his blinds. He tugged the blanket over his head, groaning.
"Evan?" said a voice, laced with worry. "Evan, honey, you slept through your alarm. I'll come in there!"
Evan, the boy, sat up, rubbing his eyes. He groaned again, feeling groggy and gross. His dirty blonde hair was messy, and the filtered sunlight made the freckles aligned on his cheeks and the bridge of his nose stick out like constellations. He opened his eyes, and looked over to the door. "I'm up..." his words were slurred with tiredness.
His mother opened the door, her blonde hair pulled into a messy ponytail. "I took the day off, so I can drive you to school today. Its your first year of Senior Year! Arent you excited?" She bounced on her toes, extremely hyper for someone who worked in the early hours and had classes in the late evening. Heidi smiled, sitting on the end of his bed.
"Yay..." Evan said sarcastically, then slapped his hand over his mouth, bumping his teeth with the cast around his left arm. "Ow. Sorry."
"Its fine, its normal for you kids to be nervous! I laid out some clothes in the bathroom for you, and theres breakfast on the counter downstairs. I also want you to write one of those letters to yourself again. 'Dear Evan Hansen, todays gonna be a good day, and here's why!'"
Evan averted his eyes from his mothers. Her smile shifted awkwardly, not knowing what to do. "I will."
"Hows your arm?"
"Its good."
"Do you need your anxiety medicine?"
"No."
"Are you sure..?"
"Yep." Evan looked annoyed.
Heidi got the hint. "Well, alright. Im proud of you Evan. I love you, hun." And with that, she left.
Evan gave a heavy sigh, standing up and stretching. He stuffed binders and notebooks into his backpack, slung it around his shoulder, and walked out his door. He then realized there was no point in doing that so he hung it up on his door handle.
He stepped into his bathroom, the second door on the right. His room was the first on the left, and it was a pretty small hallway, so it had always been up to Evan to walk into the wrong room.
He turned on the light and sighed, squinting at the sudden amount of light. He rubbed his eyes, and turned on the faucet. Throwing some water in his face, he felt a little more refreshed, but not exactly in a better place.
He ran his hand through his dirty blonde hair, giving the spikes a little fluffier look. Evan looked at the clothes Heidi had laid out for him, a light blue shirt with darker blue stripes, a collar and buttons. He threw off his grayish blue pajama shirt and looked at his thin, ribcage showing figure before throwing on the shirt. He pulled the jeans over his boxers, and sighed.
Going to school, looking like a nerdy loser. Great! Showing an image I already identify as. Just perfect. Evan huffed for what seemed like the 50th time today, trying to push the negative thought aside.
He grabbed his backpack and walked downstairs. He grabbed a piece of toast from the Kitchen and gave a long, drug out breath that was littered with panic, as he soon realized this was Senior Year. The last year where kids could push him around, and since it was the last year, he had the feeling they were going to be even (i typed this as Evan uhm) worse towards him. He was anti-social, and had extreme anxiety. This was gonna be... Oh god.
"Mom, I'm gonna go on and head out--" Evan started.
Heidi ran around the corner, scrambling to grab her purse. "Evan honey, I told you i'd drive you!" She noticed the unhappy expression on his face. "Oh. Would it be embarrassing for me to take you?"
"Wh-What?! No! O-Of course not--"
"Oh dear. Your stutter is back, oh no, honey, I don't want to embarrass you!!! I'll drive you to the end of the neighborhood, how about that? Is that okay? I'd hate to embarrass you on your first day of senior year..."
"Y-Yea. Its fine mom. Th... Thank you." Evan had a light amount of blush dust his face, both embarrassed that his mom was offering to take him, but also because she worried too much over him.
Evan opened the door, letting Heidi out before him. They climbed into the car, and drove down the street in an awkward silence. Heidi stopped at the end, where someone was waiting, supposedly for the bus. Evan said his goodbyes to his mom and hopped out the car, towards the bus stop. His mom waved, driving off with a worried smile on her face.
Evan sat on the bench where a kid was tapping angrily at his phone. He had brown hair and glasses, wearing an unbuttoned red shirt with a dark gray shirt underneath. His brownish green eyes looked up and spotted Evan, who was playing with his hands nervously.
He laughed. "Well if it isn't the Evan Hanson!"
Evan looked up, and his pupils shrank slightly.
Oh no.
"H-H-Hi, Jared."
