"Please spare me the details." I begged my closest friend, Cameron, who had just spent the last twenty minutes raving about her date last night while we browsed through the clearance racks of Victoria's Secret. When we walked in, the colors screamed and the lace enticed but after more careful examination of the products of the summer line I quickly came to the realization that I already owned strikingly similar underwear and that it would just be a huge waste of my money to buy the overpriced bras. Whoever was in charge of design was obviously running out with any novel ideas since the last three collections looked practically identical.
"But it was the best night of my life!" She croaked. His name was Travis and he had recently been hired at the nursing home where Cameron worked. As the only two teenagers who worked at Eldridge Home they quickly grew close and spent a lot of time talking. He finally struck up the nerve to ask Cameron out and they went out to dinner and a movie. "We are a match made in heaven." She insisted turning away from the lingerie to face me. "He took me out for Korean food! You know how much I love Korean! I didn't even tell him that I liked it and he picked this out on his own. If that's not like two puzzle pieces matching exactly, then I don't know what is." That's true, Cameron's father had moved to Seoul after his divorce and she had gone with him for about a year before returning to the States for high school. She even planned to return to Korea after attending university.
"Yes, yes, I get it. He understands you on a spiritual level." I respond sarcastically, cracking a smile when her demeanor drops slightly in light hearted frustration. Letting out a huff in response was her way of giving up.
"Which one do you like better?" She asked holding up a red lacy bra with enough padding to transform her average sized B's to porn size DD's and a delicate white bra with so many straps I couldn't figure out where they were supposed to support or at the very least cover one's nipples.
"Depends whether you were going for porn star or turtle caught in one of those soda plastic rings." I replied honestly. If it were anyone else I would've just picked one but because this was Cameron, the girl I had been best friends with since my dad and I had moved to the city, I knew I could tell her the truth and she would perhaps not agree with my opinion but at least she would respect it. Her mouth fell slightly agape before she whacked me with the red bra.
"RUDE." She cried, then paused for a moment. "But I totally can see that. I give up. I have enough bras at home and I don't even wear half of them. They just lie in my dresser sad and neglected." She said as she returned the bras to the rack and began walking towards the exit.
Summer attracted people to the stores and sometimes the bustle of people was just overwhelming so when an empty table caught my eye on the patio of a quaint restaurant I quickly dragged Cameron with me before it could be occupied. This table was one of the few which shielded the seated from the strong rays of the sun which beat down on our skin. My prone to sunburn and fair skin felt particularly scorched unlike Cameron who's darker, olive skin protected her from sun's brutality. The lack of trees in the city seemed to make the sun hotter and more blinding or maybe it was the lack of air flow in between the tightly packed buildings and narrow streets.
A tall, lanky, auburn haired waiter came out from the restaurant to take our order. She quickly jotted down two Cokes and two rolls of sushi, one with salmon and yellowtail tuna and the other with just veggies. As we waited on our order, Cameron brought up the topic of our summer plans.
"So, are you going to invite Seth to go California with us? I want to ask Travis to come. It'll be fun... and Travis knows how to surf because apparently his dad was stationed in Hawaii before his retirement. Isn't that awesome? He said he would teach me one day if he has the chance. It is perfect!" She babbled eagerly, her eyes lighting up at the sound of his name. Cringing at the mention of Seth I quickly dismissed her preposterous assumption that I would be dragging along that old sack.
"Why would I bring Seth? He's not meant to come on trips... His job is to help me move my stuff to my new apartment before we go. He'll be long gone by then." Just because I went on dates with Seth doesn't mean he was going to stick around for very long. I only accepted his dinner invitation because he works for a moving company and I wanted to get free moving vans and a free mover. I snickered at the thought of my ulterior motive because Seth had been one of the easy ones, quickly attracted to the bait and bit onto the hook without much persuasion or effort on my side. "You can bring Travis, I don't mind."
"I don't want you to feel like a third wheel." Cameron said and ever so quickly let out a giggle. I burst out laughing and we must've looked like a pair of cuckoos to outsiders. When we finally managed to catch a breath and the urge to laugh subsided, Cameron added, "Like you're not going to find a guy within five minutes of leaving the airport."
"Five minutes? That's too much. I'll have one wrapped around my finger before we even make it past baggage claim." We giggled a bit more and when we caught sight of our food we silenced ourselves while the waiter distributed the food between the two of us. We thanked her and she left us to our meal. Grateful for the icy cold beverage I took a sip as the conversation drifted to matters of our hotel reservations.
