"It's a complicated world. People have a hard time finding each other and when they do... they're scared to take the risk."
Hayley and I approached Jackson as we watched Oliver and another wolf sparring. We used the antidote that Celeste gave us and it worked which made everyone want to celebrate. "Shouldn't you be out there playing Fight Club with the rest of the frat boys?" Hayley asked - more like flirted - with Jackson.
"Nah. That's just for pecking order." He smiled at her. "They already know who's the Alpha."
"Ohh! Next up!" The three of us went back inside, where the rest of the Crescent wolves are setting the table for dinner.
"You gotta try Tucker's ribs," Jackson told the both of us.
He told us that we were some high ranked wolves in the pack which kinda made us alpha apparently. It's some weird family thing that is passed down from Labonair to Labonair.
"Then, what? Then we're gonna go play horseshoes?" I asked, crossing my arms and stared up at him since he's taller than me.
Jackson just laughed at that. "Hey! Don't mock country living, darlin'." He used his country slang which reminded me of this guy off of a vampire movie that Lydia made me watch. At thought of her name, I flinched. I remember how she was my friend and then went behind my back and kissed and went out with my boyfriend. Ex-boyfriend now.
"Sorry. This is just a lot more family fun than we're used to," Hayley informed Jackson.
"Well, maybe I can help you get used to it." He flirted with her which made me recoil.
Oliver then joined us. "Then, all we got to do is just forget that they spent half of their lives with humans, and the other half with vampires." He put some chicken in his mouth and looked at us, his eyes landing on me.
"Ollie, back off," Jackson warned him.
"It's okay." I stepped up, uncrossing my arms. "If the runt of the litter has got something to say, he should say it." I looked him dead in the eye. He just chuckled which made me narrow my eyes at him.
"You know, word from the Quarter is your boy Elijah's holding some kind of power summit." He licked his fingers to get rid of the grease. "Guess who wasn't invited?"
"Where did you hear this?" Hayley asked, narrowing her eyes at him.
"It doesn't matter. The point is is that we're stuck here living in the swamp, while your vampire boyfriend's deciding who gets what in the city." I snarled and took a step forward when I got held back by Hayley. "But, I guess that shows how much respect he's got for the werewolves, huh?"
