Sounds.

Noises.

Voices.

Light. Filtered into my dim consciousness.

Bright.

I was awake, but not quite.

". . It was . . successful. . treatment. Last . .subject didn't make it, but this one seemed to have a stronger willpower. . ."

I opened my eyes, two blurry figures come into focus. Neither of them were familiar.

"Who are you? Where am I?" The sound of my own voice surprised me; it sounded strange, unused.

"The anesthesia has been working, you see." One of them commented, as if I didn't say anything. He had brown hair & something around his eyes. I blinked a few times. Goggles. "It's heart rate seemed to increase over the third hour of operation, I have the data here. . ."

And they kept talking, ignoring me. I looked around. I was in a painfully bright white room that smelled like something bitter and strong, chemical-like. Something brushed against my shoulder. I looked down, I was wearing something that looked like a hospital gown, paper-thin. Was I in a hospital?

I was lying down- no, held down onto a bed by my arms. I tried yanking my hands free, but they were stuck beneath me. I tilted my head to look at them more clearly. They were stuck to my side by metal cuffs that dug into my wrists.

Definitely not a hospital.

"Where am I?" I repeated, louder and more forcefully this time.

They ignored me again, too busy bent over a clipboard.

I needed to get out of here, and find out where I was. I turned my head towards the cuffs again. They were tight, but they bent like jelly as I pried my arms apart, snapping them in two.

". . . And look at this, at 5:76 hours- hey!"

I took off, running past them, straight past the open door.

"Stop! Somebody grab it!!" His voice echoed off the bare halls. My bare feet pounded on the cool marble floors as I gained speed. I could hear hear their dual footsteps getting quieter as I ran farther, turning through hallways with no sense of direction whatsoever.

People in lab costs came rushing out of some doors, chasing after me. I easily side-stepped them, or ran last them, shoving them away without remorse.

"Get it! Call the others!!" I heard some of them yell behind me, and an especially angry one swear loudly.

Others? I thought briefly as two more lab coats stepped into my path, running towards me with a needle in hand. Someone grabbed my elbow from behind as I hesitated. I fought, managing to elbow the person behind me hard enough for them loosen their grip enough for me to break free.

I need a window, an exit, something. I thought turning another corner. Who knows how long I had until I hit a dead end? Wait- I'd passed a fire escape map earlier. I envisioned the paths in my head, still crystal clear from earlier. One more left and a right at the next corridor would bring me to a window.

I spotted the window, bright, at the end of the hall. It nearly blinded me, so pure compared to the artificial, covered lights in the hall.

I heard more voices In the hall behind me. No doubt more lab coats.

I kept running, faster. My feet whizzed over the ground. The voices got louder, and my footsteps weren't alone anymore.

My arms stretched out in front of my to protect my head, I jumped towards the window.

I really hoped it wasn't shatterproof.

I didn't have time to think twice about my decision as the window broke, sending me flying into the air 5 stories above the ground.
