The First Step

I made it just in time, the bell had rang and it was my first day. I said goodbye to my mom as I left the car making my way inside the new school. I was not looking forward to the morning cliques, being a freshmen I would instantly feel out of place standing against a wall waiting for the bell to ring. Luckily, I made it to school just in time to avoid that humiliation.

There were posters on the wall directing you to your home room, it went by last name. I was assigned a home room on the upper floor. I walked into the room and sat at an empty table, but I wasn't alone for long. First, a blonde girl sat down she then invited a blonde boy to sit next to her, they may have been a couple. Their connection made me quite envious, they talked to each other as if they had known each other for years, going over things that had happened over the years. Next sat an older girl she was stuck with her younger brother who appeared to be a freshman. The younger brother constantly pestered her and asked questions, and she tried to answer them without seeming annoyed. I didn't talk to anyone, I didn't know anyone, I just sat there at a table waiting for the lady to call my last name so I could get my schedule.

"Ereno" The lady called, handing me a piece of paper.

I looked at the paper the schedule didn't seem too exciting, and I really wasn't concerned with my classes.  I just hoped I would have someone to eat with at lunch.

"When the bell rings you will go to your classes, at the end of the day after 8th period you will come back here." The teacher explained to us up until the bell rang and all the kids ran out to pursue their first day.

I walked into 5th period, English honors with Mrs. Kem. Mrs. Kem was a nasty, big lady who was no fun what so ever. I walked into her class late due to my previous class being across the school.

"Yes?" She asked after I walked in the room.

"I'm in your class?" I said unsurely.

"Take a seat then."

I looked around the classroom, there were no seats left. I ended up having to pull a chair and sit in an awkward position. I constantly looked around the room, looking to see if maybe there was someone I knew in the class, but I ended up making awkward eye contact with a cute boy for a few seconds. Our eyes locked and I gave him a smile but he kept his stern look locked, I lifted a hand to wave at him, then he looked away before I could. I guessed it just wasn't meant for anything to happen.

Mrs. Kem called for attendance, I wanted to memorize as many names as I could , so I could maybe make some friends.

"Tommy" She called, and the boy who I had locked eyes with raised his hand and responded to his name.

Tommy had this look, the kind of "I don't care" look which gave me mixed emotions. He seemed so lifeless, careless, but something about him intrigued me. I thought he was rather cute, I kept catching glimpses at him, hoping maybe we would lock eyes again, but we didn't. I gave up. It was the first day, I didn't need to be going after a boy I had never even so much as talked to before. It wasn't meant to be.

Lunch, was not as bad as I thought it would be, I met a few people I had only ever seen before. I had managed to be invited to sit with a girl who I had a rough past with. Over the summer I told her I had a crush on her and she rejected me, I knew she was nice, but it was a bit overwhelming how nice she was. She invited me to sit with her and her "squad" of friends. I had met Brandon a nice boy who constantly cracked jokes some of which may have been quite inappropriate. There was another girl she sat with who often scolded Brandon for making such vulgar jokes, her name was Emily. I felt quite out of place, although they all tried their best to include me in the conversation it felt lonely cause I knew they really didn't know me and they were just trying to be nice. Though, such kindness was one of the highlights of my day.

Immediately after english came 6th period P.E. with Mrs. Martin. This where I found so many girls from middle schools that I had only talked to a handful of times, I joined their group of chatter and tried to fit in but it was clearly obvious that I did not, every time I said something it was as if no one had heard me speak. I felt invisible.

I wasn't too sure what to do, students were just splattered all over the gym. There was no sign of sign of the teacher until she came from a room on the side of the gym blowing her whistle.

"Last name alphabetical order!" She demanded.

Everyone scattered around trying to find their place, constantly rearranging themselves to where they were meant to be. I took the liberty to assigning myself somewhere in the beginning of the line. I asked a few people whose face and name I can no longer remember. However, I do remember one.

"What's your last name?" I asked a boy.

This boy had black hair and wore all black and this put him aside from the other kids and that's probably why I remember this interaction so well. He seemed distant though, his body language was closed and he folded his arms and seemed to keep distance from the others. He gave off the kind of "leave me alone" vibe, but I had to admit he was quite cute. Two cute guys on my first day, I guess I was lucky.

"Ester." He quickly responded.

"E-s-t, right?" I asked reassuring the spelling of his name.

"Yea." He ended the conversation.

"I guess I'm right in front of you then haa." I gave off a small laugh maybe hoping to start a conversation with him.

He didn't answer me. There went another boy.

The rest of my day was boring, not trying to imply that the interaction I had with the two cute boys weren't boring, but I didn't know what was to come yet. This was only the first step.
