The first day of summer, finally. No more cramming for anatomy quizzes or making flash cards for Spanish class. All of it. All the studying. It's finally over.

I took one deep breath as I searched my large bedroom window, which shared a view of the swimming pool, for signs of my father. It was strange to have him around for more than a week now. He works as a art buyer for a museum in Los Angeles, so he's always gone exploring art exhibitions and findings. He's life is pretty interesting if you ask me. But, I still don't know how someone so interesting ended up with someone so dull and boring as my mother. My mother is a perfectionist, workaholic, grounded lawyer who spends her weekends at the golf course or at luncheons with politicians. She never laughs, always takes everything to seriously and makes everything about her. She's the opposite of my father.

After a couple of minutes of laying in bed, I finally decided to get up and do my morning routine which consisted of washing my face, brushing my teeth, combing my hair and making my bed. I decided on a simple blue dress with some brown sandals to match my brown accessories to wear. I headed downstairs were the smell of pancake syrup filled the large kitchen. While my mother was no were in sight, I spotted my father enjoying his cup of coffee in the open study room.

"Hey dad!" I walked in as he placed his mug down on the desk.

"Look who finally decided to wake up, how does it feel to be on summer break?" He replied with a smile.

"Pretty good! I'm happy I don't have to worry about homework anymore." He laughed a bit. As he stopped and stood up, making his way into the kitchen. I followed behind him.

"Talking about homework, your mom left some pamphlets for you. She said to pick what  you wanted to focus or work on this summer. I saw some on painting courses!" He reached for the pamphlets that were on the kitchen island.

"Dad.... what if..I don't want to do any activities or classes this summer?" He looked up shocked.

"But you always do a class or two. You've always been enrolled in something during summer."

"I know ,but.... I feel like I need a break. From.... learning."

"Oh no, please don't tell me you have a boyfriend?" I roller my eyes at his absurd comment. He knows very well that I'm not allowed to have a boyfriend, I'm not even allowed to talked them or have them as friends.

"No no. Off course not! It's just.... I want to be normal... I want to have a normal summer like all my friends.... without piano classes, ballet summer camps or debating seminars.."

"So, no boyfriend?" I rolled my eyes.

"No."

"Then I'm okay with you not doing anything this summer. But we have to tell your mother before we can decide on anything." I was relieved to hear he was on my side, like always.

"Do you think she'll be okay with it?" As soon as the question left my lips, the footsteps that were coming down the stairs got louder, a figure walk into the kitchen.

"Will I be okay with what?" My mothers cold voice asked.

"Mom... you scared me." She raised her eyebrow at me, ignoring my comment.

"Well, what is it. What will I be okay with? Spill it out, I don't have much time, I have to meet Sarah at the office." She opened her coffee thermo and filled it with the coffee my father had just made.

"Well... mom.... I... I..." This was the first time in a long time that I asked my mother for something. During my last year of high school I let her pick my prom dress, winter formal dress, classes and extracurricular activities. I've let her control so much of my life that I almost forgot how scary it was to speak up to her.

"I was thinking since our daughter is leaving to college why not give her some more freedom this summer so she can hangout with her friends ...and us."  My father came to the rescue.

"Off course not. I will not have a lazy child like everyone else." Here we go.

"It's not being lazy mom." She starred me down. I have never talked back to her. EVER

"Then what is it called? What are you going to do all day? Watch television? I will not allow you to do so!"

"But mom..."

"I don't want to hear it. Leo how would you even bring that idea up? She has to stay busy so she doesn't get distracted from her education!" There she goes blaming my father.

"Darling, her education is done. She needs a break before starting college. Don't you remember how your first year of college was?"

"Mom... please.... I just want to have enough time to enjoy with everyone . I did what you wanted me to accomplish for my last year of high school. I got straights A's, I was number three in my class and I got more than five scholarships." She turned to look at me as she checked her phone for the time.

"Jessie since when do you beg. What did I tell you about begging. " She interrupted me.

"The answer is no. You will pick a pamphlet by tonight if not I WILL! And Leo please stop putting ideas in her head..... I need to go. Don't wait for me for dinner, I'll be at many business meetings today."  She then proceeded to grab her purse and coffee thermo and was on her way out the front door.

"Don't worry we'll figure something out."

"I hope so."
