Rains POV:
Rain sighed heavily and turned away, heading down the sidewalk as she headed home from school. She wasn’t excited about going home, as she knew what was waiting for her. Walking slowly, she dreaded the fact that each step brought her closer to hell. She wasn’t ready to go home; she never was. She hated her house and the people in it. Her stepfather abused her, her mother didn’t ever notice because she was too busy fucking him and getting drunk, and her stepbrother was sketchy, he didn’t talk much or say anything when she got hit. Rain pulled her sleeve down, as it had risen slightly, exposing some of her cuts. She had been caught in the self-harm addiction for three years, and already her cuts were deep enough to need stitches. She hated life and everyone in it, feeling like there was no point to ever live. Lost in the clutches of depression, she saw no way out of her horrible situation other than death.
Eventually she made it home, and braced herself for the pain she would feel once she walked inside. As always, Kevin was waiting for her, and as soon as the door closed he was there. Pinning her against the door, he began cursing at her. “Have a good day at school slut?” he asked, snarling and spraying spit into her face. She didn’t say a word, knowing it didn’t matter what she said, he would do the same thing regardless. She didn’t bother telling him how horrible her day was, how she had run off to the bathroom to cry most of the day or how Missy the popular girl tripped her at lunch and her tray went everywhere. She didn’t tell him how much she wanted to die or how much she hated him. She just stayed quiet and took the pain as he slapped her hard across the face and shoved her down to the ground. Laughing he walked away into the kitchen to get a drink. She grabbed her backpack and ran upstairs past a gaping Evan who had been watching the whole thing once again. She slammed her door shut and grabbed her razor. Done with life, she didn’t care what happened next. Instantly she began slashing at her wrists, making deep lines of crimson on her pale skin. Blood began to flow as she cut over and over again, until she knew she had done enough damage and set the razor down. She didn’t bother to stop the bleeding this time, hoping there were enough cuts there to end her life. She lay there calmly, a slight smile on her face as her vision blurred, and she succumb to unconsciousness.
Evans POV:
Evan opened her door slowly and slipped inside Rains room. He didn’t expect to see what he found, and when he saw Rain lying there unconscious and bloody, he panicked. He ran into her bathroom and grabbed a towel, and quickly applied pressure to the wounds she had created. Grabbing his cell phone he dialed 911, hoping he could get her to a hospital in time. “911, what is the emergency?” The operator asked. “Help. My sister… She… She tried to kill herself I think… shes bleeding everywhere…” He quickly gave them his address and waited for the ambulance to arrive. I should have gotten to her sooner. He thought. Why did I wait so long to help her? I could have prevented this. He glanced over at her almost lifeless body. God, shes so beautiful… I cant believe she did this… Tears began streaming down his face and shock set in, as the possibility of never seeing her dawned on him. He pulled her body to his, getting covered in her still flowing blood as he kissed her head softly and held her tight, hoping they would get there in time.
The EMTs arrived shortly after, and they quickly got to work. They bandaged her wounds, wrapping her arm tightly in gauze to prevent any more bleeding, but the cuts bled through in minutes. It seemed like the bleeding had slowed down, though. Evan ran downstairs behind the EMTs as they carried Rain on a stretcher toward the ambulance. He grabbed his dads keys off the table and got into his car, flooring it and racing towards the hospital, hoping and praying to God that Rain would be okay. He arrived at the hospital within minutes, ran inside and asked the woman at the counter which room his sister was in. A little out of breath, he walked slowly down the hallway, afraid of what he would find when he got into the room. A doctor emerged, his face grim. "Are you the boyfriend?" he asked. Evan found himself hesitating. Shes your sister! He thought. Say something. Tell him who you are you idiot! "Uh.. ye- no.. Im her brother. Kind of. Brother in law. I think. Step brother? I don't know.." He stuttered. The doctor looked at him and laughed softly. "Shes doing ok, but she has some nasty lacerations. There is a bit of nerve damage, and she lost a lot of blood, but she should be just fine." He smiled and patted Evan on the back before disappearing into a room further down the hallway. Evan held his breath and entered Rain's room.
Rain was laying there quietly, her breathing slow and steady, her arms bandaged and blood-free. He sad down next to her bed and couldn't help but stare at her and marvel at how beautiful she was. Why are you thinking about her like this? She is your sister. Wake up you idiot. She'll never like you anyways. He sighed and got up, walking to a chair in the corner and sat down. He closed his eyes, and before he knew it, he was asleep.
Rains POV:
Rain woke up to white lights that blinded her at first, but once she got used to the brightness in the room she became aware that she was in the hospital. Her arm was bandaged and there was a steady beeping saying that her heart was strong and steady. Rain began to wonder how she could have gotten here, and then noticed movement to her left. Looking over she saw Evan, sleeping and covered in blood. Her blood. Oh my god. She thought. Evan brought me here? What the hell? She stared at him for a while, and couldn't help but think about how cute he looked, even covered in blood. She began to worry, hoping he was okay, and feeling bad that he had found her in the state he did. Then she felt angry, because she had tried to kill herself and he had saved her. Why? She had nothing to live for. Her own parents hated her. Ever since her mom had gotten with this new guy she had completely ignored her, and even started drinking more. She felt bad for her mother, losing a husband and child at the same time. When her dad Kyle and sister Nicole died, her mother Veronica started drinking a lot, and it was hard for Rain to stay around. Eventually her mother met Kevin, and their lives changed forever. Kevin was violent, and treated her mom like shit. When she would drink he would leave and cheat, and told Veronica it was her fault because she was a drunk. This only made her drink more, and Kevin would get angry and hit her sometimes, blaming it on the fact that he was drunk too, even though most of the time he wasn't. Rain hated him, with a passion. He made sure he made her life a living hell, using her as a punching bag when he would get pissed off, and lately for no reason at all.
Rain began to remember when her dad and sister died. She remembered the cops showing up in the middle of the night and talking to her mother, who fell to the floor and cried as the cop tried to comfort her, the effort in vain. She remembered the funeral, her dad and sister lying in coffins next to each other, cold and unmoving. And she remembered the first time she ever caught her mother drinking. She had stared at her in shock as the empty bottles lay on the ground next to her sobbing mother. She cried and screamed it was all her fault, she deserved to die instead of them, and other hateful things as she threw things at Rain in a drunken rage. Rain, being only fourteen, couldn't handle the stress, and that was the first time she had ever cut herself. Bleeding on the bathroom floor, she felt only the high the pain gave her. She wanted more. More, more, more. She cut over and over again, bleeding and crying as she felt the girl she used to be slip away. She remembered-
*Cough*
Her thoughts were interrupted by Evans cough. Brought back to the present, she looked over at him. He looked at her, and smiled sleepily. "You look awful." She said. He laughed and responded, "Well I did have to rescue someone."
