Prologue
Serenity
My hand swipes my forehead, ceasing the constant flow of sweat droplets that cascade down my face. The sun radiates uncomfortable heat that causes my yellow skirt and red tank top to stick to my body. My blonde hair is pulled back though, a few strands that escaped hang in my vision. In my cramped state, a half smile is plastered onto my face as I tug each of the strawberries off their vines and toss them into my basket. I wear a sunhat to prevent any damage to myself, though picking fruit in the nearly unbearable heat is a nightmare. Trust me, I love Amity and their persistent peacefulness, but I'm getting pretty tired of coming home like a hunchback.
Just two more years till I take the aptitude test; two more years of picking fruit in the blazing hot sun; two more years of Amity.
In the distance, I can hear faint voices and laughter gradually increase as they near me. Female and male. I don't recognize them. The laughter is too intense to belong to any Amity as we laugh similar to the ring of bells and we sort of giggle. I flinch as the strange voices speak a few curses that my parents always taught me never to say. There's only one faction that I can think of that they must belong to. Dauntless.
In my peripheral vision, their footsteps squish a few berries and vines, causing my mouth to fall open. How could they destroy our precious fruits? My heart plummets in to my stomach as the Dauntless group stop in front of me.
I slowly elevate my head so I'm looking at each of them. There are two girls and two boys. They're all clothed in all-black attire, displaying their faction. I notice none of them have tattoos. Probably because of their age. After all, they must be like 13 or 14.
"Aw hi there farmer girl, do you enjoy picking berries?" One of the boys asks in mockery. He grins at my confused expression, showcasing his pearly whites. His chestnut hair shifts a bit in the wind whilst his eyes sparkle with amusement.
I do not answer because it will just lead to a fight and fights are not permitted in Amity. Instead I just ignore them and continue my berry picking.
"He asked you a question. Can't you hear? Or is that happy bread messing with your head?" The blonde girl sneers, crossing her arms.
My blood boils and I can feel my anger rise up in my throat, but I do nothing. My smile falters a little but it remains in place. I squeeze one of the strawberries too hard causing some of its juice to pool in my palm.
"You stupid Amity and your stupid peace!" The other boy exclaims throwing his hands up and rolling his eyes. Both boys then shove me onto my back onto the grass and my body shudders in shock. I try to regain my strength, but soon I am being pelted with strawberries, raspberries, and all the other berries in the berry family.
I hear their evil laughter as they dash the opposite way across the field in a desperate attempt to not get caught. Tears form in my eyes as I examine my berry-stained clothing. Solemnly, I gather my basket in my hand and stagger across the fields towards my home. One things' for sure: I'm definitely becoming an Amity transfer.
