Chapter 18

13 years later

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

I looked over at my clock which read eight-thirty. School was in five minutes! I ran to the bathroom, not bothering to have a shower and brushed my short red hair and teeth. Then I dresses into my school uniform and ran into the kitchen to grab a piece of toast. I stopped when I saw my sister, (She wasn’t really my sister but we lived together and were close enough to be sisters.) Raine was her name, sitting on a chair eating some cereal her curly brown hair tangled all around her face.

“School!” I almost yelled.

Raine looked at me with a confused expression then started laughing

“What’s so funny?” I demanded.

“There’s no school today!” Raine said in her soft, sweet voice.

“What?!” then the realisation came over me; it was the first day of holidays. “Oh.”

Raine had stopped laughing, “So what do ya want to do today?” she smiled.

“Um… do you want to meet Molly and Cassie at the park or something?” I suggested.

“Okay!” she mumbled through a mouthful of cereal.

Raine and I walked down to Molly’s house first and knocked on the door. Molly came out and smiled when she saw us. “Hey, guys.”

“Do you wanna come to the park?” I asked.

“Yeah, okay, just let me get some stuff,” she said and quickly ran down the hall to her room. A few seconds later Molly came out to us.

“Alright, now let’s go get Cassie,” Raine said.

We walked a couple of blocks down to Cassie’s house. Charlotte, Cassie’s mother came out; we asked it Cassie come to the park with us.

“She isn’t feeling well today, I’m afraid,” Charlotte apologised.

“Well tell her, happy birthday, from us then,” I said, remembering that Cassie’s birthday was the following day.

“I will; perhaps if she is feeling better she can come over with you guys tomorrow?”

“That would be great,” I beamed.

“Bye girls,” Charlotte waved and closed the door as we turned to leave.

Before we went to the park, we went to the deli. Raine turned her I-pod on, without the headphones in so Molly and I could listen with her. Raine started, absently dancing when a song I knew she liked came on.

She never participated in music at school, even though, I thought she was a great singer and dancer. Raine as virtually the opposite of me; where she was shy, I wasn’t, so I helped her make friends at school and introduced her to the teachers at school on the first day.

As we neared the deli, Raine stopped dancing and turned the volume down on her I-pod. I saw Molly mouthing the words to the song that was playing at that moment, ‘what you want,’ by Evanescence.

“ So…” Molly said, after a moment. “What do want to get?”

“ Chocolate,” I said immediately.

Raine nodded.

“Chocolate it is,” Molly said, taking two blocks of chocolate and a pack of 5 gum.

There was quite a long line to wait before we could get to the cashier. I groaned and we went to the back of the line. Raine turned her music up a little louder, probably due to boredom. A man with a boy who looked about our age turned around and stared at us. The man wore an odd expression before he turned back to face the register.

“Anyway,” Molly was saying. “Do you guys wanna come to my party? It will be a few days after your birthday’s.”

“Sure,” I said, not really paying attention to the conversation.

“Fire,” Molly said, waving her hand in front of my face.

“Huh?” I said.

“Put the gum and chocolate on the counter.”

“Right,” I said, as I handed the food over.

Molly paid and we walked out, eating some of what we’d bought. When we reached the park, I sat on a bench and motioned Molly and Raine to do the same.

We ate the chocolate blocks and talked for a while about how we should spend our holidays. I suggested we do some stuff to earn money, and then spend it. Molly said the three of us and Cassie should sleepover someone’s house for a few days. We had many ideas although we didn't decide whether we’d actually go through with any of them.

Soon I was bored of chattering away and told them, we should go to the neighbouring city. Banrete. If we rode our bikes it would take about half an hour and it was quite early in the day so we would have a lot of time to explore. None of us had been to Banrete before; it wasn’t that we weren’t allowed, we just never thought of going before. I thought it a shame that Cassie wasn’t able to accompany us.

In the end, Molly, Raine and I decide to go home, inform our parents of where we were going and pack some money, food and water. We would meet at the park to then head toward Banrete. It was said Banrete was a city of wonder and magic; many circus’s travelled through that part of the region. Of course magic wasn’t real.

Raine and I jogged home and Raine went upstairs to get some warmer clothes on for it was starting to get windy outside. I grabbed a shoulder bag and put some apples and crackers in it. Then I filled up a little water bottle up and put it in it also. Last of all I threw in my purse just in case Molly of Raine needed anything.

Raine ran to the kitchen where I was with her and my bike helmets. A black one with a floral design in white on it, and a red one with small, silver, faux diamonds all over it.

We went inside the garage, hopped onto our bicycles and swiftly rode to the park. I noticed that Raine had tied her hair for once, the long, brown curls still flying half a metre behind her. My own, red hair, cut below my chin not bothering me apart from m fringe sliding across my vision occasionally. I loved days like these; so peaceful and quiet.

When we arrived at the park, nobody but a boy was there. I looked a little closer and saw that it was the boy from the shop. Probably a newcomer to this part of the city, I thought.

He turned around and looked at us as we stopped by the bench. He had red hair, a little like mine but it was a lot darker, was slightly taller than Raine and I, you wouldn’t be able to see the difference.

“Hello,” he said, pleasantly. “Are you two by any chance Fire and Raine?”

I looked around for a moment, “Uh, do I know you?”

“No, but your mother does.”
