"Oh good you're up," Sienna says when I finally regain consciousness. I blink blurrily and stare right into her soothing jade green eyes that were right above my own blue eyes, her delicate nose close enough to brush against mine but I don't feel anything. If I had the energy to lift my head up just a little bit I would to see if I would feel our lips brushing together. "Rise and shine sunshine," She laughs before gesturing to our surroundings.
It takes me a while to muster up my strength as I struggle to sit up. The dream catcher and wooden cross that were lying on my chest when I was unconscious fall into my lap and I look questioningly at Sienna.
"What's the dream catcher and cross for? We should bring in the holy water and garlic if we're hiding from vampires," I say snarkily and Sienna barks a laugh. I smile, happy that I had finally someone that seemed to enjoy my somewhat dry humor.
"The cross was for protection in the off chance that the dream catcher didn't succeed in keeping you from travelling through my memories in your dreams," She tells me before the door opens with a loud bang.
"Is Derek up yet?" Magdalena asks Sienna as soon as she walks in and I wonder how her frail old body is able to carry a large, steaming cauldron. She snaps her fingers and I swear I see the broom she always carries around with her float but I dismiss the thought, thinking that I was probably still unsettled from being knocked unconscious. Of course, thinking about what caused me to go unconscious caused me to remember the strange and painful reaction between my palm and the weird symbols on the Cathedral's door.
"More awake than me," Sienna replies and I frown in confusion.
"Hold up just one second," I shout at the top of my lungs just now realizing what was super wrong with the situation. "You can see Sienna too?" I ask Magdalena shakily.
"Who's Sienna?" Magdalena asks confusedly.
"That would be me," Sienna replies with a sheepish smile.
"Oh why yes Derek, of course I see Edith. She's one of my dearest and oldest friends," Magdalena snickers to herself. I groan mournfully, clutching my head in pain. These past twenty-four hours have been too confusing for the limited capacity of my human brain to deal with.
"I feel like my head is going to burst," I moan sorrowfully and I hear Sienna's – or Edith, I have no idea who she is at this point – tinkling laugh.
"Aha! I have just the thing," Magdalena says cheerfully and I cringe. One thing I've learnt after working at the Cathedral alongside Magdalena for seven years is that her solutions are always unconventional but it was also futile to argue against her. "Just drink a cup of this and you'll be much more refreshed," Magdalena says with a smile, handing me the cup that she poured two scoops of whatever was in her cauldron into.
I peek inside the cup and I wretch, dry heaving putrid odor the hideous mixture was emitting. The liquid was opaque and viscous and I could see chunky pieces of unknown materials hidden beneath the bright green and yellow gooeyness.
"There's hair in this," I shout aghast. "Is it your hair?"
"Don't be fussy now young man, drink if you know what's good for you. Just be thankful I didn't put spiders or dog feet in there," Magdalena says snootily and I stare at her horrified, my eyes probably popping out of my sockets if Sienna's hysterical laughing was anything to go by.
"Okay Elena stop being a jokester or you'll scar him for life," Sienna intervenes and Magdalena smiles widely, winking at me before flipping her long, wispy silver hair and taking the cup with the offending concoction away from me. Huh, I think to myself, She doesn't look so nearly so old when she's being playful. I furtively glance at Sienna to see if she heard my thoughts like she's been doing all day but she gives me no indication that she hears me. Sienna, are you there?
