I walk the empty streets of Leawood on a cool, breezy night. Walking by myself through my hometown at night may not seem like the safest of ideas. Especially when I know that my town has a pretty bad issue with crime at the moment. But believe it or not, walking alone like this, helps me clear my mind.I walk alone so I can temporarily forget about my own personal issues, minor or major. I've always been like this and my parents have always hated it. Though, I never understood why considering they know I use the same route every time I walk around. Luckily, nothing has ever happened to me, and it never will. I'm more careful and cautious than they think I am. And even if something were to happen to me, some may argue I was asking for it.
I approach Hillburn Avenue, the busiest street during the day, my phone alerts me of an incoming text. Pulling my phone out of my pocket, I see I have a message from my best friend Sarah.
My Favorite Bestie (Sarah): Hey, are you still coming over to my house to help me work on the project? (Received at 9:45 pm)
Me: Yeah, I'm actually on my way right now. I'm on Hillburn Avenue by the 7/11. I'll be at your house in a few minuets or so. (Sent at 9:46 pm)
My Favorite Bestie (Sarah): Mmkay~ I'll leave my front door open. Just yell when you come in and then come up to my room- (Received at 9:47 pm)
I reply an "Okay" to her and put my phone back in my pocket before crossing the street. Taking a quick glance behind me, I notice a car following slowly behind me on the street and I tense.
Seriously, Aurora? People can drive on the street at whatever time and at whatever speed they want, you're just paranoid.
I shake my head at myself for freaking myself out. But just as a precaution, I begin to walk a bit faster, not wanting to try my luck just in case.
~~
After walking a couple more blocks, the car that was "following" me, seemed to disappear. And I eventually ended up by Sarah's house safely.
I walk up her front stairs and open the front door, surprised she actually left it unlocked like she said. There's been a couple times where she's said she left it unlocked but it wasn't, so I'd have to help myself and climb through her kitchen window. But that's another story.
I glance around at the tan painted walls in her living room before her dog charges in, making me smile.
"Honey, I'm home!" I yell, crouching down to pet her dog.
Moments later, my best friend comes into view.
"About damn time you got here, Aurora." she says, crossing her arms and chuckling a bit.
I roll my eyes before standing and readjusting my backpack on my shoulder.
"Oh whatever," I say "I was surprised you actually left the door unlocked this time."
She laughs, "I was almost tempted to run down here and lock it before you got here just to see you climb through the kitchen window again."
I shake my head and laugh with her before we both head upstairs to her room.
She takes a seat on her bed and I put my bookbag next to her, opening it and taking out my notebook and a pen.
Sarah has been my best friend since my Freshman year in High School and I don't know where I'd be without her. Now, we're Seniors and not too sure what we wanna do with our futures.
"So, what kinda music you wanna listen to while we work?" Sarah asks, opening her laptop and going on YouTube.
I think for a second. "How about twenty one pilots?"
She rolls her eyes playfully, "You always wanna listen to them."
I laugh, "I can't help it! Their music is amazing!"
"Uh-huh-" she says, as I see her pull up the newest Fall Out Boy song.
~~~
After a couple hours or so on working on our History project, I check the time on my phone.
11:45 pm
"Ah shit-" I mumble to myself before standing up and packing my things.
"What's up?" Sarah asks, looking up from her drawing.
"It's almost midnight and I should be heading home. I wanna try getting up early so I can finish the essay for my debate class."
She nods, standing up from her bed.
"You know I could give you a ride home." She offers.
I decline, shaking my head. "No, it's alright. It's actually kinda nice outside and I could use the fresh air before I start stressing over my essay."
Sarah laughs, "Alright then. Be careful heading home."
I nod and she escorts me to her front door. We exchange goodbyes and I begin heading home.
~
The same route I used getting to my best friends house, is now a lot darker than before.
I cross Hillburn Avenue and slowly walk past the 24 hour 7/11 as a familiar car pulls up the crib. Taking a quick look it, I notice that it's the same car that I saw "following" me on my way to Sarah's house. I quickly look forward and continue walking.
The engine of the car revs a bit, catching up to me. I glance behind me and notice that the drivers window is rolled down, revealing a man staring at me. My stomach sinks, and I begin to legitimately panic this time. The faster I walk, the faster the car catches up to me.
I take a deep breath and secure my backpack on my shoulders.
Screw it, I'm going to run for it-
As soon as I hear the car door open, I begin to run as fast as I possibly can away from the creepy guy in the car. Suddenly, my vision begins to blur and I feel a small pain in the back of my neck. I look behind me, seeing the blurry silhouette of the man. I begin to feel extremely weak and my legs give out from under me, causing me to fall to the ground.
It becomes harder and harder to breathe as I hear heavy footsteps walk towards me. Unable to move and see properly, a strong pair of arms picks me up off of the ground and begins to carry me somewhere unknown.
I hear a car door slam and then everything went black.
End of Chapter One.
